My Early Access review of Dark and Light
Here's the announcement.
So Snail announced they'll be opening Early Access tomorrow. I'll be getting the game (which I think was said to cost $30 on their twitter), as I'm not exactly sure how Snail could **** this up with a cash shop. It's not exactly an MMO. Supposedly it's going to be a lot like Ark (Servers, which can be made private, of at least 100 people, survival, base building, taming mythical creatures, etc...) I'm guessing that Age of Wushu 2 (which is supposed to be a lot like this, but with a Wushu/Wuxia theme like what was found in Age of Wushu) might be the result of the partnerships between the Ark team? I haven't looked too much into it, but apparently Snail is creating the Ark Dinosaur Themepark VR experience, or is publishing it or something. Seems interesting that they would work together on that and then Snail would create two games with similar themes to Ark.
That all being said, the game actually looks quite interesting. It's apparently based on the original Dark and Light that was shut down in 2008? But instead of an MMO they're going the persistent player servers route. I'm not sure what the similarities between the two are (other than the name), so I can't really comment on them.
The one thing I can trust Snail on, though, is creating interesting and good games. It's just their business models that have turned out to be absolute cancer. Seeing as this will be a buy-to-play game, I'm not sure how they could manage to **** it up so I'm going to have no issue jumping head first into it. Even if they do somehow introduce a cancerous cash shop, I'm sure I'll get more than my moneys worth in the Early Access, similar to the fun I got from the first six or so months of Age of Wushu before things began to go down the drain.
The game has a lot of interesting concepts that most of these types of survival games simply haven't done yet. Conan Exile has some features that are somewhat similar, but not quite on the scale as what Dark and Light is hoping for, I think. Dark and Light will have cities, which I guess means there will be NPCs, which makes me wonder how exactly it'll all work out. How much change (destruction or creation) can we have within these NPC cities. This game was completely off my radar so I am researching as I write this. If you guys know anything useful you can share, let me know.
The biggest appeal for me in this game is the fantasy setting. Because it's a sandbox survival game, we're going to have a lot of freedom. Building massive castles, destroying massive castles, fighting incredible monsters, etc... And it has my favorite game settings: High Fantasy, filled with magic and mythical creatures.
What I'm most excited for, though, has to be the glimpse into how Age of Wushu 2 might play. Since it seems like they're both going to be somewhat similar games - Players have a lot of freedom, NPCs/NPC Cities, a world with an actual lore and story, etc... It would be a good primer to get an idea of what to expect.
Something I thought was interesting is that this announcement came after the announcement that a very similar game - really similar, actually - called Citadel: Forged with Fire was becoming available on July 26th. Which do you think will be the better game?
