    Unhappy Game Graveyard

So I've been seeing a lot of posts asking about old games, and it seems like most people are pretty lucky in finding their old favorites.

There are many games that have gone to the big recycling bin in the sky. This is a place to wax nostalgic about those games, and maybe share favorite things about them, screenshots, or stories.

    - - - Updated - - -

I've got 3 off the top of my head:

    City of Heroes

    GunZ

    Moon Breakers

All very fun games in their times, but for one reason or another no long with us. I was watching a video of Moon Breakers the other day and it really had me sighing the sads:

    Auto Assault
    Hellgate London
    Tabula Rasa
    Dungeon Runners
    Mythos
Endless Ages (seems to be revived every now and then as private server but the host fails to update the state of the game on his website, and i think due to lack of interest he shuts it down again)
    Wizardry Online
Trickster Online (still the strangest shut-down imo. but hosted by a better team now as private server)
    Phantasy star online: blue burst

those are all the ones i cared about i think

Oh man, Hellgate London. That was a fun one. It's strange, too, considering how well Borderlands did. If I remember though it was pretty buggy.

I never got into Tabula Rasa, but I really wished I had, from everything I've heard about it.

There's a new Phantasy Star Online being worked on, but not sure if it's ever coming to western markets.

PSO2? yeah i played it a lot already because fans pretty much translated the entire japanese version and build an english patcher around it lol. the hardest part is making a account. it's definitely a fun game though. even managed to get a monthly sub on the JP server.
the history of phantasy star in general in the west hasn't always been very good so it may just never come out for us

the sad part of all these dead games is that they could simply repackage them as a singleplayer on steam and thousands of people would buy them just for nostalgia reasons lol. but apparently this is not a thing yet in the gaming market of these days.

edit: now that i think about it, even re-releasing them as 8-16 player coop games shouldn't be too hard to do... if script kiddy's can run a entire mmo server from their potato pc with a couple software tools, actual game developpers could find a huge market in this by making this more accessible for dead mmo's. back then you needed a monster server to host these games, but now even our pc's should be more than capable of handling it.

we need a legit company that buy's the rights of all these dead games and resells them remastered lol

It's funny you should mention the resurrection of the games. It does actually happen, in so far as like Star Wars Galaxies has private servers, or at least they're working on them. City of Heroes also has a group called SEGS that's working on making private servers available. In fact, I believe you can set up a server for that game now, but there won't be any missions or anything.

The real issue is the legality, and obtaining the rights. It would be interesting to see a company that had the juice and cash to buy the IPs. There are strange laws in regards to not using properties and essentially giving them up, too, that I don't know all the details on.

But regardless, I do agree it would be fantastic to see some of those old titles bought up, dusted off, and brought back up, even if only as private servers along the lines of how survival games are run these days.

There was this fun little deck building ORPG that took some inspiration from wow back in the day. Wish I could remember the name. Was browser based and even had a sequel that I sadly never got to play.
Otherwise PSO, Gekkeiju, oldschool neopets admit-ably.

I swear I was just going to put out names and keep it moving but as I started remembering more details it became more fun to write. Prepare yourselves.

    1) Survival Project I will always love for its challenging but fun PvP. Cute game with a lot of awesome PvP modes, but the PvE was meh at best.

    2) Glitch was hands down one of the most chill, relaxing and whimsical game I've played (it was basically 2D side scrolling Animal Crossing but with more). Met a lot of nice people. The soundtrack is still available online too. TinySpeck Was decent to give out all the assets to allow fans to rebuild the game. I don't know if or when we will see it finished, but I'm hoping the folks that are working on it continue to do so.

    3) Fairyland Online was an easy to play but fun turn based MMORPG that had a heavy focus on life skills you'd level through auto gathering/creating. You could also capture monsters to raise and use as allies, combine them to create new ones, and even temporarily "fuse" with them to enhance stats. There were a number of little things, such as the procurement announcements, that I really liked. The OST had a lot of short, but memorable tunes; I still whistle/hum some of them to myself.

    4) Trickster Online* is still one of my favorite 2D games. Really beautiful game with nice music and solid gameplay, though it had an odd balance to it and was plagued by the old school Pay to Win elements of requiring real money to get items to safely empower your weapons, or fix them if they got broken doing so (this along with heavy exp rates that almost required various boosters + events to make significant progress in a reasonable amount of time was the real P2W we all "loved" and hated). Still, Trickster was one of the major old school grinders out there that also had cool features like the My House thing where you could set up your own housing instance in towns and just kick it with randoms or friends, or even open up your own personal shop. That game was brutal when it came to being a merchant as well, with people constantly setting up shops at strategic locations to sell various quest/compounding materials and constantly undercutting the competition.

    5) ECO (Emil Chronicle Online) was one of those games that came out back in the day that was similar to Ragnarok Online, but never had the same kind of cult following. It had some interesting features, like you had a "creature" you could transform into in battle, playing housing in the form of an airship that offered crafting and other bonuses, and similar stat system. The OST is up there with the best ones, some of the tracks I listen to still even while playing other games. (I regularly listen to Song for Battle Field while I play Warframe. Reminds me of one of the old school Toonami/Adult Swim D&B style tracks.)

    6) Seal Online is a personal favorite for a number of reasons, though a lot of people here never really liked the game due to how cartoonish and "kiddy" it looked (then again people said that about almost every anime/chibi/cute game that came out). But SEAL online was set up very similar to how RO was in terms of how stats affected your skills/build, especially for the Craftsman class. There was no strict leveling path, you could go where you wanted to and there were various areas to level at depending on your class and abilities. There was even a Combo system that was actually useful (unlike that horrible game DECO's version) for melee classes that used various presses of A, S & D separate and together to perform powerful attacks with precise timing.

It had a pet system that wasn't too complex, but offered some great stats if you were one of the fortunate few to get the super strong ones from RNGesus after spending time raising them properly. The Fame system that granted players new titles, small perks (like getting an actual bed instead of just newspapers when you use the Rest function) and access to certain quests/equipment was a reason that players were able to make money off of etc drops from mobs which were turned in to NPCs to increase your Fame. A lot of the drops had uses for various crafting as well. Unfortunately it was a P2W designed game with equipment requiring special items to safely enchant past a certain point that you had to pay cash for. There was also a lot of people botting and using speed hacks to teleport across maps rapidly. The game is still around, but it might as well be dead because after it left YNK, they never bothered to fix a number of bugs or even attempt to quell the other problems.

Really good OST though imo. That and The Last Promise are all time favorites. Looking back, I realize that the majority of the games I enjoyed were all ones that had really memorable and distinct soundtracks that matched the locations really well. Those songs you listen to for hours while grinding and think about any time you see a screenshot of years later. That's the stuff I miss.

If you took the time to browse though some of my thoughts, thanks. May post some more later and hope you guys do the same.

*I used Abhorsen's video in this due to it being one of the 1st vids to pop up when searching. The official trailer had such poor quality that it wouldn't due the game justice in this regard. If you see this Abhorsen and would like me to remove this, please let me know*

nice lengthy post lol, how could i forget fairyland. that was so much fun when it just came out, dont think there ever been a game like it. strangely i dont remember too much of that game though.

ive had some fun with survival project too, i think it even relaunched some time ago but it just wasnt the same anymore. maybe it shut down again lol i dont know.

and no worries about the video, i should thank you for even linking it.
i liked the trailer they made for the final episode in the story :P
i wonder how the official server in korea is doing nowadays

edit: now you made me want to write some stuff about games too lol.

i know i must sound like a broken record to some but i still think Endless Ages was one of the most ambitious mmorpg ever created.
to think a game existed in 2003 where you could build a house almost anywhere in the world you wanted, and where you could play it both as a FPS and as third person. a world with no load times, just 1 big map with a couple instances linked to it. ontop of that it had water, air and ground combat and vehicles.. vehicles that were crafted from parts scattered all across the world and made by professions.

Back when it was actually functional, players could literally kill each other and steal all the items they were carrying on them, including armor and weapons. (and your potions, ammo, and worst of all, your jetpack lol)
As harsh as that sounds, the game also rewarded players that spend days on a single quest with rare guns and armor parts that were non-dropables. quests that i'll never forget doing, because till this day i've never had as much fun or drive to do a certain quest than i had in that game lol. and im not talking boring fetch quests.
Just imagine, you just spend days exploring the world to find 12 extremely creepy bosses hiding in their lairs, while dying and losing loot multiple times in the process. but you finaly kill that last bastard and you get this beautiful shiny gun that destroys everything, and nobody will ever steal it from you :P
    best feeling ever

Granado Espada - Unique in a sense that the setting is during the European Renaissance era and you control 3 characters w/ at the same time with a large cast of NPCs to build your team from.. Each characters have some interesting background story. It has the most AMAZING OST in any games I have ever played. Surprisingly, the game is still having content update after 12 years but game can be considered somewhat dead in NA/EU server. Again, the soundtrack is AMAZING!

Fairyland - I love the fairy tale story telling. A lot of emphasis on capturing monsters and what not. Wonderland uses the same engine but game almost dead I think.

TS Online - Based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Super grindy but I like the setting and theme.

Gunbound - Not an mmorpg, but an old school classic. It was THE GAME

    Luminary/Goonzu - 100% Player-driven market

Lunia Online - Not much to say. Instanced based game with but nostalgic to me.

Guild Wars - Story was pretty good. The amount of customization you can make for your team is astounding. 10 different profession, lots of skills, and so many ways to build a character. And you can customize up to 3 other heroes so that also adds to build versatility. I love this game so much. 2,000+ hours invested.

SkilkRoad Online - I didn't really get into it that much. It was grindy but very popular back in its days. Now it's bot bots bots

Team Fortress Classic - Honorable mention. Not mmorpg but it's a mod of counter-strike. Invested over at least 3,000 hours.

If anyone ever played N.E.O online than that was a bit sad... It sounded like it was an interesting game.

Funny thing about this thread. Both APB and Fallen Earth's licenses got bought up by a different company which as been making strifes over the last week or so hotfixing and improving both games. Infact they're planning on remaking APB into the UE4 engine at some point in the future.

My pic would have to be AO (Anarchy online) I tried playing it like 100 times, it was a really good game for my childhood. I don't think i'd go back to it, because its complicated and hard to get used to. I probably played every mmo that's in existence.. That would be my pic for dead - and - gone mmorpg..

Also maybe the first guildwars. I thought that was a really good game as well. Their was a lot of games I played that didn't even end up getting released too. Over the last 12 years I've been browsing this website. I havn't found anything 'yet' to fill that viod. So I continue with "WoW"

Essentially they are in a graveyard state?

Though, I would like to play a N.E.O similar game. Shame there isn't really anything, that's done, similar to it.

    1. Dragon Gem - remember thinking it was gonna be a maple story killer. 2. Secret of Solstice - I mean, ragnarok clone through and through but I had fun with it. 3. Infinity Online - a hub based action rpg, think Vindictus but less skill based and not as good graphics? I had fun with it regardless. 4. Fantasy Tennis Online - lol it was a mess and I loved it. 5. Can't remember the name (lol), or too much of it in general, but I played the heck out of it when I was a kid - Lobby based, cute 3D shooter... you drove carts/hovering carts? One of the bosses was a vampire/dracula or something... It may or may not have been hosted by GamenGame, think I tried to find it there but couldn't. Sidenote: whenever I try to space up my post, it clamps together when I save changes. Why?
