i was e-chatting with a fella who shall rename nameless but he's ginger and likes japanese garage rock and used to be a mod here and he said how he thinks it's gross when men own fleshlights and how he would be hesitant to befriend one

It's a dumb double-standard. Women want to use an object to orgasm. Men want to use an object to orgasm. Same thing. Who cares? People think too deep about it when all it is is men want to feel their penis squished by not their hands.

Look at it this way: a guy who has been with more girls is slightly more appealing because he may have more experience and confidence to control the bedroom better. A woman who has been with more guys is just unappealing and **** shamed.
Aka, a sex toy for a woman is a well accepted method of masturbation, better than using other dudes for sex (this is the mind of men, mostly north Americans). This is just over generalization, it may not be true, however, that is the perception, and that is the reasoning behind your friends response.
