It feels like cheating for men. Like you've given up, so you buy a sex toy.
Meanwhile, for a women, it's more like they're controlling their own pleasure while all the men they've been with fail to please completely, or enough.
Look at it this way: a guy who has been with more girls is slightly more appealing because he may have more experience and confidence to control the bedroom better. A woman who has been with more guys is just unappealing and **** shamed.
Aka, a sex toy for a woman is a well accepted method of masturbation, better than using other dudes for sex (this is the mind of men, mostly north Americans). While a dude using tools to ********** just means that he has jerked off way too much and lost the sensation, also likely not getting *****.
This is just over generalization, it may not be true, however, that is the perception, and that is the reasoning behind your friends response.
