Amazon Game Studios and Leyou Technologies to Develop F2P The Lord of the Rings MMO

That's right, Amazon's putting out a F2P The Lord of the Rings MMO! No, it's not the old one, and no, it's not linked to the upcoming Prime Video series.

Amazon Game Studios and Leyou will jointly develop the game for PC and consoles, and Amazon Game Studios will market and publish the title globally with the exception of China, which will be managed by Leyou. The collaboration brings together Amazon’s game technology and talented MMO developers, and Leyou’s expertise in designing free-to-play games and operating live-service games.

Considering Amazon Game Studio's recent layoffs, and their already ambitious New World in development, I have little hope here.

LOTRO was remarkable in its prime, and I feel like it's going to be a hard sell to outdo the experience that LOTRO offered.

As for the announcement, idk... LotR certainly has room for an MMO or other type of oRPG but I don't feel Amazon has yet really shown its stuff, yknow?

Having Missy look into the censoring thing! We edited the censor list as part o f the ongoing forum changes today and for some reason we're not entirely sure about it's now doing some very strange words! Thanks for the head's up!

RE Amazon: I fully agree!!! They definitely seem to have bit off more than they can chew if the recent layoffs are any indication. Instead of starting small with a couple games and building organically, they hired thousands of game developers for umpteen projects, many of which then seem to have crashed and burned!

There is, of course, The Lord of the Rings MMO out there already, and it had a large fandom, but I think it's past its prime and quite dated both in graphics and in game play.

I'm looking forward to seeing what comes of it, but I'm not going to hold my breath or anything.
