Default MMOs That Are Not Pay-to-Win

Pay-to-Win means different things to different people. Some are in the camp of ‘any convenience item is automatically a pay-to-win game, no matter what’, some are not. Jason will outline what he defines as pay-to-win before listing these games, do not worry. This is not a comprehensive list, just a couple that players may want to take a peek at.

I followed along with this pretty well until you hit "Blade & Soul" and then the sound of screeching brakes were in my head.

I know I've discussed this with you before, but B&S is incredibly pay to win. Upgrade materials for your equipment have a low drop rate and can be bought rather freely in the in-game market, and it is very easy for those with money to whale their way to the top. There are self-acknowledged whale groups in PvE, who sell their runs to players looking for clears, and in PvP, who absolute decimate in most areas with no way to really best them via skill. The disparity is rather huge and affects the entire game's economy.

That of course isn't to say that it isn't an enjoyable game if you're a free player (I definitely enjoy it, and have only bought occasional cosmetics) but it is a whale's paradise.

Not all "pay to win" games are unfun, but you do have to, at times, accept that you'll never be the best, and that it has nothing to do with your skill level.

I knew we talked about Blade & Soul a few times, but I honestly forgot it was that bad. Bah. I'm going to nuke B&S out of it then.
