People say the darndest things when moving along in life "this includes everyone". I think you look just fine and look like an above average dude. It's pretty funny that your mom said that to you. Not to you maybe, but just in general.
Don't do something because of what the guys say either, they might be jealious because you have more good looks than them, "I live in California, they are essential". Do what you think that will make you feel more presentable for yourself. And remember what your woman friends want as well
