    Default Algebra help

    I hate 9th grade <_<. Okay so help me out.

    Problem:

    An advertisement for grape drink claims that the drink contains 10% grape juice. How much pure grape juice would have to be added to 5 quarts of the drink to obtain a mixture containing 40% grape juice?

    I think I might have it. My algebra teacher is a dumbass who won't answer any questions or explain anytihng to us. I have to figure it all out on my own. I love how she just said to me "When you get back from your suspension we're having a test on chapter 3!" So I've gotta learn the entire 2nd half of the chapter on my own for the test.

    Edit:

    Jakuza I'm taking AP Algebra

    I'm having a brain fart at the moment because I'm still thinking about the funny thing that happen in math today. But I think you put it in a equation. Change the percents to decimal. But I dunno how to set it up.

    Wow AP Algebra in 9th grade... I'm taking AP Geometry in 9th grade... but whatever someone already answered the question. Get 1/4 of 5 quarts then find 10% of that (I think).... P.S. A good way to piss off your teach is to ask how you could use this in the real world. They'll have no clue because they don't know.

    Wow... ok, that was probably the dumbest thing you could have said involving this question which obviously deals with the real world lmfao. It's grape juice, dude. Maybe say that when someones asking about a quadratic equation or something, at least the teacher will have to take a while to figure it out. lol

    And I'll second that, Lothia. Only college credit math classes here are College Algebra and Calc, I think just those two.

    Wait, you learn that in 9th grade? I learned it in 8th...but I guess the schools decided to force us to learn different things. Stupid school...

    As far as I know, this is called 'Weighted Averages' which is a weird name for it. I did the problem, and I don't think Saint is wrong, unless we're both wrong...

    Wait, are you in Alg 2 or Alg 1?

    I took Alg 1 last year, and I'm in Geometry this year (8th grade). I used to think that being in MypIB (Kind of like the IB program for middle school) was special, but I've been feeling pretty stupid lately

    And Endless, some schools go Alg 1 -> Alg 2 -> (Something else)

    While other schools go Alg 1 -> (Something else, for me Geometry) -> Alg 2

    Supposively Alg 1 helps in Geometry. And yes, Math is pointless in about 90% of jobs.

    I think we have different books. My old Algebra 1 covers Saint's question in chapter 2.

    I'm afraid I disagree with you Ska. There are a lot of jobs that require you to know math. Accountants, programmers, teachers, office people, engineers, etc. Math is something you should learn. If you play sports, you'll find that understanding degree's sometimes helps your skills. I know somethings in math are useless, but there are a lot of good info in there that will help you get a good job. If a subject is pointless, I'd say that it's History. I mean, who cares if you can memorize all the presidents, and all those dates? That's not going to get you the best of jobs.

    Thats like saying science is unimportant. So what if Oxygen is diatomic or if electrons form a cloud around the neuclei (sp). Or P.E... Why take P.E. if an hour later your going to the caf to eat a slice of pizza and fries along with a gatorade filled with sodium. Don't get me wrong I love PE, I'm 14, 5'11'', 140lbs. and kickin it. Or... English. Who cares if the direct object is what the verb is doing something to. Or if an ancedote is a short story. Seriously. They send us to school because we're all going to end up obese when we get older so we might as well be smart fat people.

    5(10) + x(100) = y(40)
    50 + 100x = 40y
    x = y - 5
    50 + 100(y -5) = 40y
    50 + 100y - 500 = 40y
    100y - 450 = 40y
    60y = 450
    y = 7.5
    7.5 - 5 = 2.5

    5(10) + 2.5(100) = y(40)
    50 + 250 = 40y
    300 = 40y
    7.5 = y

    Algebra's pretty lame, but Geometry will suck your soul out of your face. It's that boring.
