yea gimp is really good but also honestly isnt as easy to use as photoshop, lately i been using this program called Pixel..its not free but its cheap and really nice..also one liscence entitles you to run it on every operating system and it supports like every OS in existance, http://www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/?page_id=12
