    Default Gaming... my life :/

Honestly, I'm fed up. Most games these days are unoriginal (Driv3r, Just Cause, Saint's Row), annoying as hell (running around a dungeon to find a key for a door that's almost falling off its hinges)

    OR

They're appealing. But they're not out yet. And they require a good $1800 dollar investment in hardware. (*cough* Vanguard *cough*)

Now, I'm not ranting on particular games, so don't get defensive. I'm actually fed up with myself. I've let myself get slowly drowned in an obsession of gaming that upon realizing how pointless it is, I try to think of what I have, apart from games... Nothing, really. Though, I am young, and I don't have school currently. I think I need the homework, for something to do. I try to get immersed in some random MMO and fail horribly, noticing the repetition and low amount of socializing.

I have met some nice people through gaming, namely my friends at school, but also random people on WoW. But it's rare. Mostly people like myself, working away at a goal that means nothing. Some satisfaction, but only over the 200 hours invested into it. I could have been doing something productive, be it learning or getting together with friends (..and doing something other than playing video games). My new year's resolution is to cut back on this bad habit for a good while. At least until a real Virtual Reality MMO comes out. Not semi-reality.. Reality. Think .hack, people. (See: .hack)

The point of this post is not to make you realize anything at all. If you're happy, keep it that way. I, on the other hand, needed a way to vent and form my thoughts, I don't keep a journal (don't have the patience) and the topic was gaming, so here you go, OnRPG! My rant.

I think that sometimes, people expect too much from games. They are just games. If you are investing hours and hours into games thinking that at some point you will get something worthwhile out of it, prepare to be disappointed.

It's also important to realize that sometimes even though you think you want a game to play, you don't. If you are one of those people who plays a game for a few days and gets bored, chances are you don't really want to play anything. You are looking for a game that doesn't exist, and hopping from beta test to beta test isn't going to help you find it.

I see MMORPGs as tools for social interaction and entertainment. Play with friends at a casual pace. That way, when you move on from that game, you can remember the good times you had. If you spend all your time grinding for the next level, all you'll have are memories of wasted hours.

I believe video games have integrated themselves into our everday casual lives. Not like what it used to be when it was fairly new and before Nintendo entered the market.

Video games have created a sub-culture of 'gamers'. Personally I split the gamer community in two. The 'gamers' and the 'nerds'. Gamers are your casual/hardcore players. Nerds are the ones who have the Mario keychains, collectable miniatures, 'l337' speakers, etc.

If you're a gamer, then you should have no problem breaking your habit because you should have played at least over 1000's of titles already and feel that playing a video game is just a casual thing and that you would do something else if the chance arises.

jus the totally opposite attitude towards gaming

i guess sometimes u reach that stage where gaming isn't really 'fun' anymore.

Firt there's the single playe games, and some had great gameplay and achieved a kind of cult status amongst gamers. I know a succesfull 30year old that only plays Hereos of Might Magic III and find MMORPGs rather pointless. I've watched him play and he's an exceptional player and it was like watching a game of chess (i could tell he was really having a great time). I don't think he's alone, rather on the contrary i still believe there are a large fanbase for these classic single player games. In a sense these are largely made up of old gamers who in a way have missed out on the whole MMO phenemenon.

But when MMO games and LAN began appearing, single player games kind of relegated to the background. And although they provide hours of enjoyment, and a satisfaction in beating the game, the allure of player against other real life players, both friends and randoms was something that offered gamers a form of community, and emancipated them from the nerd-geek-loner stereotype. These new games (Everquest, Ultima Online, Starcraft and Counterstrike) offered gamers a form of pleasure and enjoyment that was absent from single player games.

I think it's precisely this initial thrill and the new gaming experience found in these early forms of MMOs that kept these games alive for so long. (Ultima Online for 10 years, Starcraft 10 years and still going, Cs 5 years). I have a friend who has played practically all the MMORPGs out there and yet still regard starcraft as his online game of choice, and once again, his not alone. Thes 'old' online has pretty survived by retaining its initial player base and grew with them.

The question has to asked why do these games have such a long shelf life, compared to the current MMOs. I think there're several elements. They were the original MMOs, that captured a whole cross section of the youth generation. They were build on single player games and there gameplay was invested heavily (this is to be distinct from MMORPG who have since has become a platform of its own and detracted from single player games, in other words MMORPGs now have a whole new set of rules and gameplay that is totally detached from single player games.). Thirdly, these early games had a focus on skill, and community. People discussed these games, how to get better and the different tactics involved, online replays, tournaments. and once a player's skillful is progressive and applicable.

I remember the most fun i had with a game was playing Cs with a friend of mine at a LAN where we rushed the terrorist team on de_inferno and took out their whole team by ourselves.

But nowdays, as the OP points out, the games on the market seem to lack gameplay and community, or in other words something that can hook you and make you come back time and time again. Whether its' becaue i have aged or there is a real defiency in what the current games can offer to games, it seems im definitely not alone in finding that games now are just not 'as fun' as they used to be.

Nah ... I think the most of the WoW players still live in their moms basement.
And don't even have a girlfriend...

I agree to some point that mmorpgs tend to be repetitive. "Unique" features of mmorpgs make up for it. Take WOW for example. It has millions of players and I still don't know why

I myself have tried different different mmorpgs and getting bored of them all. Looking back, I realised I have wasted hours after hours just to play those games [I never play them long enough to get to a very high lvl] and I still can't stop.

Anyways, if you [like me] is an mmorpg "addict", you can try playing mmorpgs with friends. It's much more fun this way and it takes the boredom away.

Hypocrital? I guess not since you have only 1 post, I guess you could say you don't keep long updated journals or something.

BTW you may want to talk to someone who knows you about your problem, because no one knows who you are especially since you have 1 post. This way you can get some real feedback into what you're talking about because I don't really understand your point. Real life .hack?

    were you high?

I think hes point is that there is a real lack of community feel in MMORPGs, and gaming has become repetitive and unenjoyable while there's nothing to fill up the void.

But how can that be true? If you think about it, you will never run out of games to play nowadays there are so many, I think his problem is he doesn't know what he wants.

i play games quite often, although rarely it does happen that i tend to neglect certain things i should be doing because i'm to excited in a game (this occured a few times in neverwinter nights and a dungeon run in Rappelz, it was so amusing i lost track of time), but as i said, rarely.

What I sincerely critise is the statement of a lot people saying 'stop gaming, get a life, get a hobby'. You read these things everyday, aswell hear them perhaps. personally, i think gaming is equal to any other hobby. it has the same proporties of a hobby, being: you spend time on it durin free time, it is meant for amusement, relaxation, it's usuably to express and lose stress with (unfortunately, this last does not count for addicted gamers, since they create stress by gaming). And people who say that addiction besides drugs, alcohol is only placable for gamers, i would dare to say that there are addiction beyond gamers (ofc ...), as well in those 'praised hobby's that most people subscribe to gamers, such as sports. It's a sort of addiction to have the urge to always wanting to get first prize, that involves days and days of continous training, negelectnig other attentions. To even use illegal products to maintain your results, which is a very slight form of fanatism,

so no. Gaming is not bad
