Aha, okay well when you start a new document, it should have an option to set the background as transparent. Once done, save it as .PNG which will make it acually transparent. And to move the render behinde the text, just move around the layers. Hope that helps, I haven't had Gimp for almost 2 months now, so this is just from memory.
