    Default Guitar

Who here plays guitar? I have been playing the electric for five days now. I can only play Smoke on the Water, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Happy Birthday, and Jingle Bells though. I have my second lesson on Saturday, can't wait.

I've got an alright guitar. The brand will probably make you all laugh, First Act. I got it for $180 and everyone I've asked said it is a pretty good guitar for that price. I'm going to be getting a Fender or Gibson next Christmas though.

I'm thinking about buying an acoustic this summer because you need your own to take guitar class. Besides, all the girls dig a guy who can play acoustic.

I used to, but lately I've been busy with other stuff. I remember I could play Iron Man and The Star Spangled Banner. I beleive mine was a First act aswell, or another one of those cheap start guitars.

Also, I broke a nail on acoustic once, and I'm never touching one again! Was trying to play a Cash song. >.> Though my dad seems to be real big on acoustic, but most of the time he just plays spanish songs. >.>

Well, playing guitar generally gives you small nails. Notice how no one who plays the guitar has long movie star finger nails.

It wasn't that long, and by breaking a nail I mean the ENTIRE NAIL broke off. =(

How did you manage that? = / Never heard of anyone doing that just playing acoustic before. Must have been decently long to really catch on the string.

I go hard core when it comes to strumming, this time I was playing a Johnny Cash song and was really feeling it. And well first it just kinda got cut, and I had to pull it off cause it kept bothering me. >,<

Also, I was also thinking of starting up again. Maybe when I have a job so I am able to pay for the lessons my self. (50$ dollars for a week >.<)

    (i meant strumming >.<)

Yeah but I'm almost positive my parents wouldn't pay for it; they'll just say that I'll probably stop playing guitar or get bored of it in a week, and I'm too damn cheap to pay myself. My sister knows a little bit of guitar so she could get me started I guess (not as good as lessons would of course), all of her friends play guitar really well though so if I become interested in guitar, I could always ask them.

Yeah, if you aren't extremely into it getting lessons may not be a good idea. I'm obsessed with my guitar.

Teaching yourself is not impossible at all, as you know I play bass and I was self taught. Although, if you want good technique it's best to either go for lessons or jam with other musicians.

Most of the people I know that play are self taught. A Friend offered me lessons for like 10$ a month last year but I was too cheap to buy a guitar and was getting a load of other stuff for christmas already. I do plan on getting one and teaching myself soon enough though. There are some pretty cheap electric guitars around here.

Just make sure you're doing things right before practicing. Learning the wrong way really screws you up.

I started playing the electric guitar in september, I taught myself because my parents wouldn't let me get lessons. It's really easy to learn, and I actually think at the beginning its better to teach yourself cause the money isn't worth it and it's also kind of obvious and plus everything is on the internet. Also youtube helps, you can watch how other people play and figure out the ********* yourself. I use tabs from 911tabs which also helps. I can play all of Animal I have become by 3 days grace, but it's a really easy song >.<. But I don't think lessons are necesssary until you want to be more advanced. I mean you could have taught youself mary had a little lamb by searching tabs on the internet. I know a whole buncha acoustic songs and some electric power chords, and I taught myself. So it's not impossible >.<

I have been teaching myself from the start. I've been playing for almost two years, and have never had a lesson in my life. What do you say to that?

If you have bad technique/habits its really difficult to unlearn them and learn them properly. That's the main disadvantage about self-learning.

Been teaching myself for a few months. Wasn't that serious so I just took it slow. I can play the rhythm guitar for most songs and play the lead on a few... Can't really solo much though, I can't sweep pick yet. :P

I respect those who play acoustic. Those who play strictly electric cease to amaze me. Meh... I got you all beat: Violin, 9 years. I'll break it out and hit up a tune or two but I'd never I admit I play violin to people i know in real life.

Violin players got my respect. I have a friend who started learning since he was like 7, and his finger speed is just amazing...
