Fitness Experts Endorse Wii For Health Benefits

    From: Gamasutra

The International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) has released results of a new survey into exercise and video games, finding that technologies such as Nintendo's Wii "may prove to be just what fitness experts are looking for to help their clients get more active".

Dr. Josh Trout, Professor of Kinesiology at California State University Chico, who specializes in video game technology and exercise movement, is cited as saying: "Exertainment and home video consoles are the wave of the future."

He continues: "Exergaming can provide excellent health benefits, but so can a Stairmaster, lifecycle or treadmill, if you do it. If a person has chosen a sedentary lifestyle, there is not much a new technology is going to do for them. On that note, exergaming, and exertainment, is an excellent way for getting kids hooked on physical activity, producing good exercise habits that can last their lifetime."

The survey of the association's members has them asked about possible health benefits and risks related to the use of 'exertainment' technologies implemented in such consoles as the Microsoft Xbox, the Sony Playstation 3, and the Nintendo Wii.

Nichole Snow, an ISSA Certified Personal Trainer and avid gamer, was one of the more in-depth respondents, advocating Konami's Dance Dance Revolution along with her fellow trainers as "…definitely more of an aerobic game - I see kids all the time enjoying it and losing weight - I think they gain a lot of aerobic exercise without realizing it."

She also noted of Nintendo's new console: "The Nintendo Wii will show benefits for everyone. Whether you can sit down for the game or you have to be standing, it involves movement. The best part is its just fun - for everyone. Deconditioned and obese individuals will find it fun to play and gain aerobic movement out of the games. Seniors can enjoy gentle movements of bowling and golfing. Youth become a part of the game and don't just turn into vegetables in front of the TV."

She concluded her comments by noting: "Everyone can burn some calories and learn some good health habits from Nintendo Wii's fitness, and the system is just too hard to pass up when watching anyone play."

Who knew the only way to get Americans to do healthy activities was to not let them know they're doing it?

OR...you could just run for like what...15 minutes, and get double the exorcise you would from swinging your arm back and forth for two hours?

I swear to god, soon we are going to have machines to wipe our asses for us.

I played the wii for almost for a night straight and it wasn't tiring at all. You most have to be seriously out of shape and well ******ed to need the wii to help you lose weight.

Maybe Wii is not actually to lose weight, but flexing your arms and legs while playing really helps with keeping your body fitter ... Thats what i think. every movement counts~ like someone who exercises by wlaking 30min to 1hour a day, if you play the Wii like 2hours a day while moving, i think its great~

can't wait till my birthday to get 1 ... lol

people, do you not realize, its not made to lose weight, the point is to just get you active while your playing video games, its just to you cant sit there and only move your thumbs, you have to do more. Swinging your arm is better than moving your thumbs, that the whole point.

Think about it oisterboy. You would have to be ******ed to use this thing to lose whieght.... Come on you're playing a video game console to purposley lose whieght. You must have some serious mental malfunction to think that using the wii to lose whieght is actually an effective way of losing whieght.

    *Arrives at McSony's*

"Welcome to McSony's. Is that for here or to go?"

"To go. Yea, i'll take a #3 and 2 boomerangs off the value menu."

"Would you like to obesitize that sir?"

"How much extra would that cost me?"

"The prices on the menu are at the obesity rate, however I can take $200 off your PS3 price and throw in a Wii for the youngster, for free."

"nah, if i'm going to get fat, then my kid is going to grow up to be just like me. I'll take A Ps3, a slimline Ps3, 2 boomerangs and a diet coke. Trying to shed a few pounds if you know what i mean..."

"Your meal will be right up sir"

    "Hey, one more thing."

    "yes?"

"does the mighty kid PS3 come with a toy?"

"Yes, all of our PS3 systems come with an accessory not made by Sony"

"Why aren't they made by sony?"

"So when Sony launches the console, hardly anyone will have a mic"

"Kid, next time, we're going to JackintheXbox"
