Default Tabula Rasa - Latest news from GDC (Games Developer COnference)

    From: Eurogamer

NCsoft has released more information at GDC for Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa, highlighting the features that hope to set this PC sci-fi MMO apart.

The game is set in the middle of a cosmic battle between evil invading aliens and the last free sentient beings, which means you lot. You'll be able to explore different planets with wild and varying environments, using fancy weapons and alien powers to survive extinction.

You'll instantly recognise familiar MMO mechanics, such as a persistent storyline, crafting abilities, and clans.

Where Tabula Rasa hopes to differentiate is with its fast-paced combat, blending first-person shooter gameplay with role-playing elements. Couple that with integrated voice chat, clan wars, and strategic battles, and the experience will be more like Battlefield than Warcraft.

Creator Garriott is confident of the game's success, predicting sales of at least a million when it's released later this year.

He'll be showing off a demo in San Francisco, and we'll also be cornering him for a chat. Expect to hear more soon.

Dang I want to see Huxley and this competing! I really have high hopes for both, TR is coming from NCsoft, which has made some very nice games and Huxley coming from Webzen which has some hard-core projects now, meaning S.U.N, Huxley, Wiki and APB.

    Only time will tell.

but don't forget, one of the creators of this game though is Richard Garriott (helped design ultima, lineage, and city of heroes)

Richard Garriott even invented a written language to be used in the game. It looks kind of like heiroglyphics. Oh yea, just so some of you don't get the wrong idea, they have described the gameplay in terms of attacking enemies to not be completely like an fps, but rather the hit or miss, and damage, is still like standard mmorpg stats.

In an interview, Garriot said "If you are an MMO player, you will walk up to a creature and start playing whack a mole. But since the creatures are stronger, you will likely die. If you are a first-person shooter player, you start hopping and moving around, dodging bullets. That’s not how this game works. So those people also die. Tabula Rasa is a real-time tactics game. For example, if you and I were fighting, the game is full of sand bags. If you and I were fighting, we would do equal damage to each other. If I were to step behind a sand bag, I would take a lot less damage. If I squat down, I can get an easier bead and I am taking considerably less damage. The monsters know that too. If you’re in a tactically superior position, they will come around and kick you to the ground because they know while you are squatting you are a much more vulnerable hand to hand target. It’s all still done with die rolls like an RPG. It’s still my equipment and my character’s attributes that affect the calculation on damage. So instead of looking at my user interface, I have to watch the behavior of the creatures. Each creature, as many as we could write a custom AI for, requires special engagement tactics. There are for example shield drones. If an enemy shield drone is around enemy units, you do no damage. So you have to sacrifice one of your players to go inside the shield where they will be attacked hand-to-hand by all the bad guys inside that shield. "

Anyway for more info on this game, you can check out a number of recent interviews with Garriott,
