In ancient times the geeks did not understand what lightning came from so they created Zeus and so did COUNTLESS other civilizations what makes us different? We don't understand how life began and other things so we made up god.
Was it him who helped you out or was it you? Your belief and thought that god helped you, made you stronger inside and made you do whatever it is. Everything is inside you sometimes you need belief and some hope to activate it. I personally have adapted and getting that inner strength by some other feelings, most likely you can to with practice. Concentrate on a person you love and to create emotion image that person in different ways for example image your loved one death and being tortured to get furious and raged.
