Vietnamese Government Cracking Down On MMO Gamers

Tags: What is it with this "hyper-puritanical" oppression that is infecting the globe like a cancer? In the U.S., "neo-conservative" politicians are determined to control every aspect of an individual's behavior according to their own narrow standards. Middle Eastern countries that once knew secular and relatively egalitarian societies are now reverting to hyper-patriarchal medieval theocracies. China tightens the noose around its own people, monitoring Internet traffic and punishing severely those who go to the "wrong" sites. Surveillance devices are being placed on streets all over Europe.

And now, the communist government of Vietnam has condemned a relatively harmless pastime as "Social Evil." Yup, we're talking about (*gasp!*) Internet Gaming.

What in the name of the gods is going on here?!?!?

The latest "Enemy of the State," according to Hanoi, is Vo Lam Truyen Ky or "Swordsman Online." Internet gaming, a passion in many Asian countries for over ten years, is a newcomer to Vietnam, bursting upon the scene about a year ago. Since June of 2005, cyber cafes have sprung up like weeds, and people of all ages spend hours every day in virtual worlds. In true reactionary fashion, the government in Hanoi have started writing ordinances that restrict the amount of time people are allowed to play MMO games.

"What I love is becoming somebody else - sometimes a hero, sometimes a traitor. I can even try to kill my wife," said one 37-year old gamer, who insisted on anonymity for obvious reasons. Twenty-nine-year-old dentist, Tran Khanh Long, said Vo Lam is successful because "Vietnamese people love Chinese martial arts stories." Given the checkered and complicated relationship between China and Vietnam over the centuries, one might guess that this is just part of Hanoi's attitude on the issue.

It seems to this writer that if people feel the need to spend most of their time inside these "virtual" worlds, it is because they are getting something from it - power, pleasure, adventure, romance, or something else entirely - that their "real lives" fail to provide.

Sometimes - as William Shakespeare put it - the fault lies not in our stars (or our games) but in ourselves.

    Soon it might spread?

    Spread to where? The states?

I highly doubt that. I don't like our government, but if they pull some shit like limiting the amount of time we can do something, whose main purpose is to entertain, I'm going to revolt, .

I understand regulating the sales of games(in other words, younglings can't get M games), but literally making it so someone has to play on a clock, or else they're in for one hell of an ride?

That makes playing games virtually impossible to enjoy, always knowing that if you're grinding for an item, you can't continue, because the law states you have to stop after 3 hours of play, or some shit like that.

Let the commies and monarchists do whatever the **** they want, just leave my Democracy out of this, .

EDIT: Sorry if this sounds harsh to people who live in these countries, or whose' homes are located there, but it's the truth. Your government IS just trying to tighten it's grip on it's citizens, which is bullshit.

Well if it come to that. They might import 'daily hour' in which it to prevent a person from playing too much because it might corrupted their minds.
    Then that would suck.

the daily hour thing would suck ass. I mean what about the people with no ife except the one in browser, or they have manifested themselves into a demon hunting cutesy little hellion, as in their favorite game.

Well, they can limit someone's play, but be smart about it. For instance, I play a foreign game called Arad Senki. The system they've got going is actually pretty cool. I don't know much about, but from what I hear, there's a little blue bar on the bottom of the screen that circles around your interface.

It decreases the more you play. It's called the "Stress Meter", I think. Once you've either done enough missions, or been in a party "long enough", then the meter runs out, and you have to wait till the next day to play.

However, it didn't bother me as much, even when I found out what it's used for...

Any DnF or Arad Senki players who know more about the stress meter then I do, please interject, but that's what Chaose told me it's for.

stress meter goes down by 1 each time you clear a map. however, it's independent for each character.

How come asians are heavily addicting to MMOS most of the time. Don't start flaming and saying I'm racist because I'm asian myself(And I never got addicted to a game)I play about 3-4 hours on weekdays and like 6-8 on weekends. But seriously. In asia people are killing people so they could just play some crappy MMO?

I don't hear any ethnicity beside's asian's killing there grandmas so they can play MMOS 24/7.I couldn't even think of killing my mom.Make's me feel sick and sad to even hurt anyone for the sake of going to a cyber cafe every day for 15 hours.I feel sick..

I don't think US will make a limit. We're a FREE country. Not a stupid cooped up society kept from the rest of the world. So, they'd probably ruin the constitution if they limited internet activity. Trust me. I can see it now. The sixties being back with rebellion and protesting for peace, man. If said problem happened.

Well imo, not meaning to offend anyone. Many of the asians playing these mmorpgs never played gaming consoles and/or have no access to the internet. After their nations went under modernization the internet and other forms of technological entertainment took them by the storm. And so they became addicted to it because they never tried it before.
