Many people play games just to role play and get away from their real life. Role playing marriage is a pretty big step towards showing you want their dream world to intertwine with yours. I think the dumb part about marrying someone in game though is when one of the spouses doesn't allow the other person to date someone in real life because of it. That's when it gets ridiculous, but that's usually just among preteens.
