If his cuts then he probably has the cheapo stuff.

It all depends on your preference. Wireless is easier to move around.(Haveing your comp anywhere in the house/right outside without having to rewire all the time) and cable is good as well. The bad thing about both is the farther you try stretching the signal the weaker it gets. But note: If you get wireless be sure to wep encrypt it. In a lot of places I know people can piggyback your net as long as they don't hack your computer/or whatever.(legally, since a lot of places dunno what to do with it.)

For online play, if it is possible... I can't stress this enough... CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE CABLE!

Why? Well, wireless networks usually have a nice packet error rate, so even tough pings are good, you'll get lagged like hell...

I, for one, CANNOT cable it, as I'm in a new house, my parents don't want to start opening holes everywhere just for an Ethernet cable to travel across the corridor to my router, so I use wireless... But I'm a pretty heavy online gamer, and all the packet loss I had (Linksys Wireless-G router/receiver) made it IMPOSSIBLE to play almost anything... I simply took about 500€ (about the same in $) from my pocket and bought a NetGear Wireless-N router (WNR854T, about 300€) and a NetGear Wireless-N PCI Reciever (WN311T, about 200€) which can use Wireless-N instead of G, which triples the in-network speeds and lowers the packet error rate tremendously (even tough it does not remove it 100%!) as it uses multiple wireless connections at once instead of just one...
If you CAN'T cable it, and have 500€ to spare, get Wireless-N routers... If you don't have the money, then buy a wireless-G router (cheap, you can find many around 30€) and:
    1. Have the receiver as close as possible to the router
    2. You probably won't be able to play many online games (especially Real Time ones, like shooters etc) without lagging your hell out...
