There's a really handy 2D game engine called Haaf's Game Engine (or HGE). I'm also a beginner, and I find this engine to be quite nifty. It's used with C++, which is the language that I first learned. Check out the forum stickies for guidelines including web sites with tutorials. HGE's web site and download both come with tutorials.
