    Default Manditory Drug Testing

So, NY State just recently passed a law stating that our school can drug test anyone, at any time, with a reasonable amount of suspician. As long as a teacher can justify drug testing a student, he or she will recieve 5 days suspension, as well as a hearing with a school official. The drug test will be a saliva test, which can be thrown off with even advil or other common OTC pills, which some people need in order to operate daily. The test can test up to 4 weeks prior to the testing, so, the test proves NOTHING. I know plenty of people that smoke marijuana outside of school, and never smoke before or during school. Refusal to take the drug test is an AUTOMATIC confession, and a 5 day suspension.

I am seriously thinking of transferring schools. I bet I am on the top of that list to be tested. I never smoke or drink or do any illegal drugs while I am in school. I never abuse any substance before school either. This is a HUGE invasion of privacy, and I think the whole idea is rediculous. I think what I do at home has NOTHING to do with what I do at school, and its bullshit they are suspending me for it.

Taking illegal drugs is an offence no matter where you do it.

Just because you're being tested for it in school, doesn't mean it's because you're doing it in school.

I don't have anything against drug takers, however, it's against the law, you get punished for breaking the law... It's only a matter of time really.

Anyway, good luck not getting caught...

They are trying to keep drugs out of children. I commend the school system for taking action, all you need is to have a parent note or doctors slip saying you need to take this medicine for a pre-existing medication.*

Its not really a violation of privacy, rather a stricter method of keeping drugs out of schools and out of children. If it upsets you so much, then I would transfer schools.

    * I was refferring to the common OTC/ Advil/ whatever sets it off.

They are trying to catch drug users that use drugs IN SCHOOL. I haven't been high in school for years. What I do at home is MY business, and the school has NO right to invade that privacy. If the police want to come to my house with a warrent, and seach it, so be it. I will take full responsibility for everything I have, everything I have done wrong. But, when I am fine in school, and they test me for something I did over the weekend, I feel like they have stepped over a line. Not even stepped. Tried to stop on a dime going 90, and slid over the line and off a cliff.

    I agree with Oisterboy.

Although they're testing for illegal drugs, it's still an invasion of privacy.
I mean yeah, if they found something like PCP or Heroin, fire away but for things like Marijuana which can be taken for medicinal purposes then it's just stupid.

If I was you, I'd be feeling pretty claustrophobic right now =/

And how exactly would they be able to tell the difference between somebody who's taken drugs over the weekend and somebody who taken the drugs in school?

Everyone could just use the excuse that they did it out of school...

I am...its extreemly scary for me to be honest. You know...it just feels hopeless. Like, now that this happened, I feel like they can do anything. One thing I always liked about school, was that it didn't follow me home. You know, I was a student at school, did what I was supposed to for the most part, and did my own thing at home. Now, the two are one in the same...

Even though possession of Marijuana in most states is illegal, medicinal purposes. I think California and Oregon legalized it for cancer patients.

Anyway, I don't see how its a breach of privacy, if you did drugs you really need to be busted. Seeing as though its illegal, would it matter if you got tested at school, at home, at the mall? Illegal is illegal, no matter how they find out.

The most dangerous part about using drugs is the dealing and actual usage of the drugs. Before, the teacher could ask a student to see what he had in his pockets, etc...which I can understand. I can understand suspension and such for possession. Thats one thing. And, I understand testing the sports team...because, when signing up for a team, you understand thats whats up. But, I'm just an at home user.

My mother knows...she told me I'd better lay low, or be prepared to switch schools. I have friends in the school I might be transferring to, and their grading policy is much better. I may actually switch schools. If enough kids did, they would lose massive amounts of money from the state, which may make a dent in their egos...I dunno. I was looking for some advice for a mass protest, I just don't know how to go about it.

Thank you, dear Xenonight2. Its hard to converse about this with people who are undereducated on the positives of drug use.

What? I never thought drugs were good for you. Probably the only drug that could be considered good is marijuana, but even then that has some pretty bad side effects. I just think it should be legal because the government should have no right to say what you can and can't put in your body when it's your body. Call me a libertarian if you want, but that's what I think.

Good luck finding a new school! Is this a public school you're going to right now? Augh, I have my problems with the U.S. education system. No Child Left Behind is just damn stupid.

I saw that it didn't look right after I typed it, but couldn't think of how to reword it.

What I meant was, its hard for people who only know what health class taught them about drugs.

I agree lots of drugs are bad. I am only an advocate of the ones that can be picked out of the ground and used (without any extractions and stuff). I know LOTS of drugs are bad, but thats not where I wanted this thread to go :P

Erowid -- more information than you could ever stomache (google it if your EVER curious about drugs of any kind)
