Default Why are people switching to linux?

I heard that linux is a OS dedicated to hosting, programming and hacking...
So are people using linux programmers and hackers?

    No.
Black metal is a heavy metal subgenre dedicated to worship of Satan and anti-Christianity, or generally just anything anti-religion.
So are people listening to black metal Satanists or religion haters?
    No.

But yes, they might be programmers.

I see your point, so why might other then programmers, or hackers use Linux?
    I am very curious.

    Because it's versatile, that's why.

That, and I hear it's shitloads more stable.

Linux is very easy to expand on,if you look most every linux distro is just an expansion of the linux kernul, with added things to make a more friendly user workspace.

First, the association of hackers and linux is stupid and not true. It is propaganda that was fueled by Microsoft to give Linux a 'bad image'.

Not to say hackers don't use linux, but to call it a hacker OS is anything BUT true.

Now, you got to ask, why is linux so common in hosting? Mind you, it's not dedicated to hosting. Not at all. It was developed as a desktop OS, and thats what it was from it's first moment of birth, and thats what it still is mainly.
But it's used for servers a lot. But also, windows can be used for servers. There is a special server edition of windows, but even XP Pro can be used as a server OS, and many people do, for their private server OS.

Thing is, what makes linux used so much for servers is the following:
Free. In a server farm, one can have about 10000 servers. Each one needs an OS. Win 2k3 server costs $3,999, and you can install it on 25 devices. So thats 400 copies you need to buy, end up costing you $1599600.
And thats JUST for the Operating system.
On the other hand, linux is free for the most part. There are a few versions that cost money, but it's no more than $100, and you buy it once and you can install it on as many systems as you wish.

Next, it is more stable. A LOT more stable. Where windows, even the server edition, it is recommended to reset the system at least once a month so it can basically "clear" itself out and preform smoothly, there are linux systems that have uptimes that last years and years. You turn it on, and you never need to turn it off.
    Crashing is almost nonexistant too.
    And viruses? Trojans? Don't exist.
They are nearly impossible to hack with proper care.(ie: don't download a random file that someone sends you and run it under administrative)

And there is a much greater degree of choices in the versions, because anyone is able to edit the OS in any way they wish. Where windows the code is sealed up and the very act of cracking and modifying the windows code is illegal by the contract you agree to by buying the software, it is encouraged in linux. So you have all these versions, and chances are there is a version out there that suit's everyone's style of computer use.

The reason why linux is becoming really big right now is that Vista was such a huge failure. The companies need to keep up to date with new software, keep secure. But the windows option is a complete piece of shit and they are avoiding that. There is Apple's OSX, but then they also need to buy new hardware. But linux? It runs on anything! Pick up a free copy, and install it on all your current systems, and you're good to go.

Thing is, it's one draw-back in software-wise, is due to the fact that Microsoft owns DirectX, no other company has legal rights to publish DirectX runtime libraries. So, long story short, Linux can't play most games. Not to say there isn't games on liniux. ID, the makers of Doom and Quake are very big on Linux systems, and so are a few other major game companies.

But in the long run, to run windows games on Linux you need to get an emulator which will emulate a windows environment. Under that you can run windows software, but not all software will work. A lot will, but not all.

Oh, and here is a good OS anology:
    If Operating Systems were airlines
    ----------------------------------
    UNIX Airways

Everyone brings one piece of the plane along when they come to the airport. They all go out on the runway and put the plane together piece by piece, arguing non-stop about what kind of plane they are supposed to be building.

    Air DOS

Everybody pushes the airplane until it glides, then they jump on and let the plane coast until it hits the ground again.
Then they push again, jump on again, and so on ...

    Mac Airlines

All the stewards, captains, baggage handlers, and ticket agents look and act exactly the same. Every time you ask questions about details, you are gently but firmly told that you don't need to know, don't want to know, and everything will be done for you without your ever having to know, so just shut up.

    Windows Air

The terminal is pretty and colorful, with friendly stewards, easy baggage check and boarding, and a smooth take-off. After about 10 minutes in the air, the plane explodes with no warning whatsoever.

    Windows NT Air

Just like Windows Air, but costs more, uses much bigger planes, and takes out all the other aircraft within a 40-mile radius when it explodes.

    Linux Air

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, "You had to do what with the seat?"

Oh honey, in the end these are just physical bodies that we shall shed into the afterlife. There is no "male" or "female" once you die, but why wait?

Just one thing, I need to be on top
