    Default Wierd Idea on Zero

If you had the problem 0 / 0 (zero divided by zero) Would the answer be All Reals, No Solution, Undefined, Or something else?

If you took the word problem it would be something like this.
There were 0 apples and 0 people got 0 apples. Therefore would the answer would be all reals (infinite solutions)?

If there were 15 apples and 0 people got 15 apples it would look like
    15 / 0
If you multiplied both sides by 0 you would get 15 = 0
    Which would be No solutions

But if there were 0 apples and 15 people
    0 / 15
    You would have 0 = 15
But in real world terms all it would mean is that nobody got apples, therefore the answer would be all reals.

    So if you put
    Infinite Solution / No solutions
    What would you get?

Interesting idea. Its similar to the X = X + Y thingy I questioned in my other thread.

I think there is a flaw in there somewhere, because you can't exactly divide by zero, anything divided by zero automatically becomes screwed up. o_O

I don't really get what you mean by solutions though.

There is stuff on wikipedia about dividing by zero and 0/0.

Anything devided by zero is infinity. If you devide 6 by 2 you get 3 because it takes 3 2s to get 6. If you devide 6 by 0 it's infinity because theres an infinit amount of 0s in 6.

Well, close, but, Factor 6. 6=0*n comes to 6/n=0 which is impossible. There is nothing that you can multiply 0 by to get 6.

However, 0/0 is a different matter, look up (btw, rather then infinity think of it like this:

    Given n Can not = 0

    n/0 = undefined)
0/0 is my explanation above which is much more vast then undefined.

Can some mod rep this dude. He got me from confused to happily understanding this.

Edit: Nevermind, Alexander proved him wrong.

Alexander explained it very well, but in case you want another source, check out http://mathforum.org/dr.math/faq/faq.divideby0.html and http://www.math.utah.edu/~alfeld/math/0by0.html

    Black holes ahoy!

Anyways, some dickhead math professor decided he'd just invent a new number that comes out of dividing zero by zero. I heard this a while back. It's got to be the stupidest thing ever because he has like zero proof as to why it should be :\.

It would be impossible because it would just **** up what we've been learning since 1st grade.

to Bacn: Anything divided by zero is not infinity, it is undefined...
to jubin: Well I just can't believe such a stupid question was asked. It's obviously undefined.

    I just noticed
    Try doing 4x0=0
It just means that none of the 4 comes out, and its unspecified.

The theory in Math/Calc is that any equation used that creates a divisory of 0, then the answer is said to be undefined to thus used equation, do to an irregularity in the equation itself.

For instance, the qudratic formula has an equation within it that can be used for other purposes; however, if it comes up zero, it means the answer is undefined and only available through imaginary numbers.

    0/0 = undefined.

you can't split 15 apples between 0 people, thus it is undefined, not imposiible.

Actually the domain of anything divided by 0 is undefined.

Let's suggest you have 0 apples and you want to divide them among 0 people. Well if there is 0 apples, then how can there suddenly be infinity? Your thinking that for every person, there is a set amount of apples. Well that's the problem, 0 isn't an amount. It's the absense of an amount, positive or negative.
