Hey guys,
No, this isn't a request for a game although it might seem like one from the title. It's just another discussion I wanted to bring up.
Basically, you see all these companies that have been framed for the 'cloning' verdict. Basically, it's usually a bunch of crap since the game has been in dev. since before the other game that it's copying was out, but sometimes it really is a clone.
I mean, the process is simple. Successful MMO = Good money maker. Successful MMO clone = Earn money quick scheme. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
In some cases, it adds features to the original game, like how Ghost added the pvp, Ghost being known as a Maplestory clone. The game leaves off a lot of other stuff from MS that make it less appealing still, but this brings me to my next point.
Runescape clones. I have yet to see an accomplished runescape clone. "Zomg rs suxs, y mak a clone of dat?" Well, let's see.
Medieval MMOs = Popular.
There's the driving fact. A lot of people like those, and are willing to try them even if they turn out to be a big huge pile of crap like Ferentus. Now, let's take a look at other aspects of runescape.
Good quests. The quests actually require you to follow a storyline unlike a lot of games, but the storyline is open-ended. You're not trying to do one specific task, because theoretically the game would come to an end with that storyline. In RS, the quests are just tasks on your journey to being more heroic then you were the day before.
Job skills. Bored of killing things? Crafting, mining, fishing, very popular requests in MMOs, and personally one of my favorite things in RS or any MMO for that matter.
I mean, take RS and do better graphics. Fix up the quests so they are a little more challenging perhaps, take away the grind a little more by good exp from the hard quests, keep the active updates and events and expansions, and make the job skills a little more fun.
That right there, would be a successful MMO. One of the most popular things in a lot of MMOs is crafting. In a lot of games you grind, get the items, and go to a guy. In RS, you have to mine for the items, improve your mining level, smith the ores, improve your smithing level and also smith the bars into new items.
I personally like that better then going to an NPC with some items you randomly found and asking him to make you something.
So why has no one made a Runescape clone that's like Runescape on steroids? Do you guys agree that it could easily be successful if they changed a couple things for the better, but kept the active events and updates?
Discuss. xP
