    Default 2008 and MMORPGs

I believe that this year will be an unique year for mmorpgs... mostly because there isnt so many mmorpgs coming, which i believe is a sign of something new and that a lot of the ''game-full'' companies have given up...

games like aion, aoc, war and so on, are games that might be a change for the mmorpg market, well we can always hope it...

2007 was a bad year... everyone was hyped and almost every game turned out to be as bad as any other korean grinder, repetetive game and so on... the only good one would be DOMO, according to most people... and thats a huge failure, as there were about 100 games out in 2007..

what do you think? my hype is definately on aion and not like any other on mabinogi, even though its free...

my hype is on WAR,just that alone will make 2008 a damn great year...but i foresee heaps of good games out aswell, guess i'll get AoC for the meantime, or possibly DarkFall...maybe a new Webzen game will finally see the light in west (crossing fingers for it to be SUN)...

    GW2, TCoS,Aion,maginobi....

damn,2007 was pathetic indeed, and 2008 will come with so many games...its almost unfair,i'd love to have time to play them all...

indeed.... though war looks a bit like wow, and hell yeah hopefuly SUN will be out soon...

i might get gw2 cause its f2p, and going to be better ( as they say) than the other ones... hopefuly they will make it non-instant-based

but really... aion got me catched, the whole gfx thing is unique, but i might as well try mabinogi... dunno what TCoS is?

My bet is on the F2P market and here with Florensia. Japanese OB very strong. Finally a game from Japan who will makes it.

On P2P I believe WAR will be strong. AoC in his market segment as well. Aion the gameplay will tell. Not sure yet. Spellborn I do not see.

I smell dissapointment brewing already. the only thing i'm looking forward to be different is Parfait Station. Everything else seems improvements on the old.

    Go Parfait Station

the p2p market is going to get loaded with good games this year, WAR, TCOS, Darkfall, AoC, Aion, you name it... I am mostly looking forward to darkfall, its just amazing, i'm totally impressed by it, mostly the gameplay... I so hope that aventurine doesn't screw it up. As for Aion, i just don't like the style, at all.

Also WAR, and AoC will be great, and TCOS will be great too, i just don't know which to play first, next to darkfall that is. Ahh well, i'll just buy them all.

2008 will be a good year for p2p mmorpgs, as for f2p i don't know, last year there were some great disappointments, so i wouldn't get my hopes to high for this year either, f2p just isn't as good as p2p. But i do look forward to mabinogi, it looks okay.

Mabinogi and Warrior Epic are the only wins I'm seeing so far for the f2p category, otherwise p2p is might take the cake.

Really hope F2P can come out on top this year - it would really help after the disappointing 2007 year.

    2007.. A year with allot of crappy F2P mmo's.

    I'm looking forward to 2008 F2P mmo's though..

Also Aion looks pretty good, even graphic isn't all.. :/

Let me say something from the aspect of a game project manager.

I think the year of 2008 will be a year of f2p MMORPG year. A lot of new games are made out during the year of 2007, especiallly by the companies in Asian countries. More and more companies will bring Asian games into the English market. So 5-element, 12-pet, 8 diagrams..these, the mythology of chinese culture will spread on the internet.

Also, companies in US and EU will present some heavy mmos too, such as Age of Conan, World of Warcraft Expansion Pack etc. But if they continue on p2p, they will still leave the f2p market to the Asian companies.

Players are tired of grind of the year of 2007, and I think players will tired of quests in the year of 2008: Why do we need to do the quests? Can we just play a game in a simple way? Quests are designed more and more complex and difficult, but player group is growing and they will spend less time on gaming, so fast lvling mmorpgs will be shine in the year of 2008 i think.

Well, that is my personal opinion. BTW, welcome to pdo, lol~

true that, but u forgot one thing.the fast leveling concept is monopoliced by western productions, every new asian game is grindier than the former, and that spirals up to the sky.

you say they are exporting their themes and culture, but u dont realize they are also exporting us their concept of MMORPG.
asian cultures and more specifically players, have a far bigger attention span and a way higher resistance to grind, so they really dont care how much lifetime it'll consume the game as long as it adds a few other good features.

also remember that every "asian game" release we get here is, on average, 3 years old so....no, im afraid 2008 will be exactly like all previous years:

dozens of anime-ish/child-ish games with a crapload of grind and virtually no endgame content other than the occassional pointless PvP...with a few decent games scattered here and there...and thats all.

i think 2008 will be the year that will prove that quality has a price...those unwilling to pay something will get nothing in return...obviously

2007 wasn't the best year in gaming that's true, although DOMO did get released and I am happy with it. (Yup I know some of you guys hate the game but I'm not a very picky gamer and it just gave me what I expected and I am still enjoying it.)

2008 does look promising. Am interested to see how the final version of Holic will be like, am also waiting for Emil Chronicle since I've heard so many good reviews about it as well.

Ragnarok 2 seems to have been a major disappointment, I haven't tried it yet though, so I'm still waiting for an English version and since they just implemented a raised level cap and more, maybe the game will get better.

Definately going to try Mabinogi, been hearing good things about it for years, only thing I am skeptical about is that it may be overhyped like Seal was. Both wonderfully good and enjoyable games in their time but sadly the english version is a few years late. Am hoping Mabinogi is still worthwile and won't be another Seal Online disappointment.
Florensia is also on my list of games I am looking forward to.

Plus I am hoping developers will finally start making more action MMORPGs. (Good graphics and gory gameplay for you guys that enjoy it and an Anime themed one for me )
I don't mind the usual point-click, skill-spamm game, I still enjoy it, but a revolutionary combat system would be a fun distraction.

Plus I hope we get more information on Projekt Wiki, I loved Zelda Wind Waker and although Webzens project was a blatant copy the Windwaker's artstyle, I can't help hoping that the game is still being worked on, it looked so promising. And i also hope we get some information on the new MMORPG Square-Enix is working on.
My MMO time will be cut short anyway because of University later this year but still lots of things to look forward to. ^_^
