Balberith - An ex-prince of the order of cherubim. Now in Hell, Balberith is a grand pontiff and master of ceremonies. He is usually the one to countersign or notarize the signatures on the pacts entered into between mortals and the devil. He is called "scriptor" and is so noted on documents executed in the underworld. In The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology, Balberith appears to be the demon who possessed the body of Sister Madeleine at Aix-en-Provence, and who revealed to her the names of other devils. [Rf. Michaelis, Admirable History of the Possession and Conversion of a Penitent Woman; De Plancy, Dictionnaire Infernal (ed. 1863), where as Berith, he is pictured with a crown on his head and astride a horse.] (a)

Baalberith: According to Wierius, a demon of the second order; master of the Infernal Alliance. He is said to be secretary and keeper of the archives of Hell. (b)

Baalberith was the chief secretary of Hell, head of its public archives, and the demon who tempted men to blasphemy and murder. When seated among the princes of Hell, he was usually seen as a pontiff. He was also quite a voluble sort: according to the Admirable History written by Father Sebastien Michaelis in 1612, Baalberith once possessed a nun in Aix-en-Provence. In the process of the exorcism, Baalberith volunteered not only his own name and the names of all the other demons possessing her, but the names of the saints who would be most effective in opposing them.
