There was a JP .hack mmo but it was closed down, sadly.
I doubt there's going to be one like it anytime soon. The closest thing I can think of atm is PSO.

there used to be a japanese online ps2 game called .hack fragment, but the servers were terminated like a year after the game came out lol o_o. It was supposed to come out in the us, but never made it..and there are no future plans to bring the game back ever

I sure hope its p2p if they ever make a real one. It doesn't deserve to be f2p, it would be so shitty if it was. So many nubs and fanboys trying to look like characters from the show, botters, spammers, etc, oh my god.
But yea, PSO is the closest thing so far. It's not bad.

they already received permission to produce the mmo as long as it remains completely free.

Honestly, A .Hack MMO is destined to fail, think about it.
1. .Hack would have major grind and very few quests
2. (This one would depend on whether it was R:2 or R:1) Adept Rogues are massively underpowered.
3. The animes and the games don't really explain all the games mechanics even the explanations they give are very vague.
4. Most people would try to look like their favorite character
5. The game would need lots of programming as "The World" is almost organic.
And this is the opinion of a fanboy.

The 3D one is R:2... and remember they can make it as they want to... and I wouldn't really mind grinding without quest... after all my favourite mmo is Ragnarok .... the only quests are for items and jobchange....
I dunno bout the char thou :S
And about game mechanics.... they're making the game .//hack but without hacks (I think so) and in multiplayer.... anyway I really want a grind like that one ^^ as long as its more like .//Hack GU than the normal one...
And I don't understand what you mean by '' organic ''...

the Beta for R2 was horrible but then again so was the engine they used, they are porting it over to the torque engine so expect alot more from R2.

There is a whole bundle at our blockbuster of .hack games, one or maybe two are in japanese. I ve seen one was a fake mmorpg, that after you beat it , it kept sending you emails.
It was 20.00, it had 4 or 5 games but I got a Pac-Man instead.

i think the main problem is that we don't really need another 3d point n clicker but an acutal .hack game. I mean the whole virtual reality aspect is what makes the game and anime interesting (other than that the anime is so dull. The console games have a way better story). That's what people need to try to make.

wait... what? Ability to wield weapons from any other class, dual wielding single-handed weapons, possibility to learn skills/spells from most other class + the only class in the game that can "advance" twice is underpowered to you? what else do you want them to do? dual-wield two-handed weapons?
No, not exactly, its neither like matrix nor like tron, they don't get confined in a pod, and they don't get digitized either, they wear 3D goggles, it's something that exists already in this reality, the movements and behavior are just over-done in the anime/game, but they're actually just wearing goggles with monitors inside and using a controller which looks a lot like the Xbox controller with PS2 buttons.
i did actually ask them about that, they are just porting it to the Torque engine because the old engine/script screwd with them too much and they had a lot of errors, unfortunately, they're not actually planing to beef up the game itself or give it a facelift.

if .hack online will look like .hack//G.U. vol1/2/3 this can be really nice game
missions in dungeons, colecting some item and in the end reward with some weapons/armors or something
missions where u must set some items from chest or just kill boss
normal lands where u can go and exp there or make some pvp/pk
this tournament system 3v3 or something
ahh i want that game online ;(((
