The tearing up of a person's eyes while cutting onions is a result of a chemical reaction. Cutting the stem of an onion will release sulfurous gases. These gasses mix with the liquid in your eyes and causes a irritating reaction.

The best way to avoid any problems in cutting onions would be to not cut the bottom of the onion when you peel or cut an onion.
