I would say roughly three quarters of the lower command chain are like that.
With the low ranked officers, Id estimate its about half and they are usually much worse.
The command staff people are mostly really decent folks, but they are just doing administrative work anyways.

As soon as you give a person command over 10 fellows, he looses all that you'd connect to a human. Thats actually what an army is about. The better the food is, the worse the troops are.
A soldier is a vehicle to deliver firepower towards the enemy to suppress it and dismantle its defensive capability. Thats about it.

Oh and Deimos, you wouldn't believe what experts those guys are in hiding how much of an ass they are in their normal life. I do not imply anything and you shouldn't bother with that to much as nearly everyone has that side to himself hiding inside.

but that implies that war is a necessary alternative, rather than the truth which is that it is a choice made through no other options being available, thats not much of a choice.

no, war isnt necessary in your sense of the word in this argument; as a justifiable alternative to other options

however, yes war is necessary in the same way that falling is necessary when a man leaps without aid from a tall building.

also, the red army killed almost as many people (jews POWS and the like) as the german war machine did. liberation depends on who is doing the liberating. for some in the east the end of war was the beginning of more hardship
