Oh, but to add to what Deimos said, Africans certainly weren't the first and certainly won't be the last to have been enslaved. (Hell, it's ongoing to this day)

what keeps racism going is the fact that people still use the term "race".
how can you define "race"?
is "race" actually a real thing?
what does "race" actually mean?
in its most basic term "race" means ethnic background
i for one believe that "race" is an obsolete term which no longer has any real meaning in todays world
what we really mean is ethnicity and cultural bacckground
i dont care what people say about political correctness, i think race is an obsolete term borne of a prehistoric era
in todays world we should be more aware of our roots and our sources, race is a term sported by the eugenecists of old, it is a way of classifying the peoples of this world in an A,B,C, fashion, like so many scientific theories. it i a way of placing people in pigeon holes so that they may be studied and applied to general theories of the period.
well in truth the word "race" has no meaning since "racism" has no meaning. these words only symbolise a discomfort or disaffection with a given minority within our own community. wether or not we accept this other community is on our heads alone. racism doesnt enter into it. what we are really afraid of is the unknown, the outsider, much like people from a somerset county being afraid of those outside of thir own county... the foreigners
we arent afraid of the minority, we arent afraid of the strange or the occult, the problem is we dont accept anyone outside our known sphere
it isnt a question of racism, its a question of the unknown. we are far more prepared to accept those into our community who have shown themselves before rather than those who are unknown. all racism is based on the unknown, which is why it should not be called racism. it is basically ignorance, ignorance of the other world, it is born out of local "common sense" and local stereotypes, we hear about it on the news, we hear about it in general term, but the real culprit is the man on the street, the person in the shops, the guy in the hairdressers, its the heart of our community which generates this ill feeling
i know we cannot change this overnight, but if we all just realize that its the system which pits us against each other, then we can start to make amends
it is the thoughts of old which force us to be enemies, the new age of thought yearns only for peace (if you are positive in mind) but it is the stereotypes of old which force us into the hate channels which we have to live
if you just accept the guy next to you, ignore his racial ignorance, put forth your own point, make known your own persepctive, then you can make a difference... even if you are only one man
racism is the persecution of one race towards another. well we are all one race, the human race. i like to believe that counts for something, i for one am proud.
