Kojima Disappointed With Metal Gear Solid 4

Looks like Kojima Jr. isn't the only one disappointed with Metal Gear Solid. The latest issue of the UK's Edge magazine contains an interview with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, who expresses disappointment with the latest game in the series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. It isn't so much the gameplay itself as it is the graphics.

"Game-wise, it's pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision - to my satisfaction.

Now Kojima is a well-known perfectionist, but it is a bit disturbing to see him voice his dissatisfaction with what is supposed to be the masterpiece of the franchise. So where does he lay the blame for not fully realizing his vision?

"When we first showed the game engine at TGS, the staff were really proud and happy. PS3 was a dream machine, y'know, and we were going to work on this and that - and we had so many ideas. But when we actually started developing the game, we realized there were a lot of restrictions and so it turned out how you see it today. The original vision was to go ten steps further, the reality was just one step, which isn't to say we didn't progress.

So there was certainly progress made, but not enough progress...or more specifically, not enough power for progress. Apparently the team overestimated what the PlayStation 3 was capable of.

I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn't really do that because of the CPU. We're using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the PS3 machine, it's just that we weren't really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered - we were creating something we couldn't entirely see.

Well there you have it, straight from the man himself. Metal Gear Solid 4 is not revolutionary. Personally I think the man is being a bit hard on himself, but that's what great minds do.

Ah, well. It's great that he's modest. I couldn't picture Kojima as an asshole at this point. He seems really cool, and dedicated.

One step closer to being like his Idol.

Shit, man, it's not your fault you overestimated the PS3. It was made out as The Source of God's Power during it's early days. I think everyone was at least a little expectant that the PS3 was going to turn the world upside down, at least as far as graphics are concerned.

(Not to get off topic, but, The Conduit built ground-up for the Wii looks pretty nice.)

It'd be pretty amazing to see how far the PS3 could go graphically, considering what we've seen so far.

One has to remember that Hideo Kojima comes from the school of film directing. A film director is taught to take the images and sounds in his head, and transplant them into the camera with the resources given to him (in the best cases the studio and producers, and in worse case from what's around him).

On paper, video games and CGI are the prefect tool for this, because the only limit is what you can do in the software. However, anyone who actually works in I.T. or in the computer sciences knows that there is also a finite hardware limit (at least until someone cracks quantum computing).

Also, there is an extra limit in video games in which the mechanics of the game must be considered from the point of view of the audience. Now, in a way this ties into the talent of the director, because a good director imagines the film from the audiences viewpoint, and this is taking it to the 3rd dimension (thus this is why Hideo Kojima is a genius as he has done this very well). But the limits of the software and hardware can also put extra limits on this as well.

So what we have here is a vision in his mind of the perfect art (even if he doesn't think so) piece that is totally interactive. To be honest, I think it'll be well past his, and maybe our, lifetimes before that sort of hardware/software barrier is overcome to create anything near what he envisons.

Consoles are being touted to last longer than people are willing to wait before making a new one, that's the problem.

Even if the 360 could last five years, it won't be worked on for that long, simply because they'll bring out a new console. It's how they make people think they've made an investment, when they haven't.

Thats one of the reasons I like Sony, because they support their consoles 10 years after its been released. I wish Microsoft would do the same.

People are still making games for the PS2, mind you they arn't really all that great, but the fact that people are still developing for the system sure says something.

Sorry, it's a physical reaction. Like a twitch you can't get rid of, though I'm trying my best.
