Ever heard the three gorges dam project? the largest hydro-electric power station in the world. The project will be finished completely in 2011, and will potentially reduce the coal consumption by 31 million tons per year, cutting the emission of 100 million tons of greenhouse gas, etc etc

So, i think china wouldn't collapse that easily. They are even expanding their market right now to Africa....

At the current rate, the reserves will run out in 4 months.
It will be years before that dam is built.
And you need coal to build stuff.
If the coal runs out before the dam is built, that dam will never be built.

It's a big thing because China hosting the Olympics is, more or less, a symbol that they have become a world super-power, and not simply an extremely large 3rd world country.
It's a status symbol, a badge so to say.

Hey, they have plenty of cheap manpower. They can easily do as the Egyptians did and use pulleys and ropes and giant stones with slave pulling them with a slave overlord behind them with a whip cursing them for their Hebrewness in Chinese.

Honestly, they'll probably get a bunch of emergency aid and oil from places like the U.S., or a few countries in Africa since they (we) all rely on them quite a bit. Oh, sure, we American citizens would love to see a big civil/human/animal-rights-violators, mega-polluters and potential future-enemy to collapse, but fact is, we like their cheap labor and goods too much.

    truth.

plus if china had to borrow money from the west then that would put them in our proverbial pocket, just like most of africa is now.

Can't say I'd feel too bad if China did peacefully collapse (Though I'd feel sympathy for it's people), but I doubt it will happen. China is too big, powerful, and influential in the world right now for that to happen. Either they'll strong-arm everyone, or they'll march some troops near a few borders.

Maybe this is good thing to stop burning fossil fuels and it will lower the pollution.

China needs to be green for the olympics to bring safety to the Athletes
Yes, because Going Green is more important then something like the lives of one third of the planet's population.

also i remember reading somewhere that alot of people in china still use wood fires for heating and that because theres so many people doing that its just as bad as the pollution from heavy industry.

so even if they ran out of coal the entire population would turn to wood burning and the problem would still exist.

you only stop burning fossil fuels when you are rich enough to invest in alternative means. fossil fuels are awesomely cheap!

Just a fun little snippet; to get a good idea of how many people actually live in China, use this analogy.

In the typical American Ranch, there lives a family of 4-10, and these are interspersed across the frontier.

In China, they have something similar. Only instead of ranches with 4-10 people, they have villages of 200-300 people.

With that many people, pollution is going to be a problem no matter what, even if they all revert back to the dark ages of technology.

I kinda figured, but I just don't like comments that sound stupid. It's one thing to joke around, but make it clear that your joking (Text is not very good at sarcasm).

Currently 6 billion people inhabit the earth. The maximum capacity of the earth should of been 2-3 billion.

    Seig Heil!

On topic: I'm a little curious, why is China's population so big? I mean it can't be the fact that they've been around for quite sometime, cause other countries have too, right?
