That's why you don't spread it out yourself. It'll end up getting caked on and just harm your CPU, especially if you're using a heatsink since it won't have any contact with the chip.
Put a tiny drop in the middle, then put your fan on top. Spreads it out thin as it could be.

Once. Unless you change the CPU fan or take it off. Then you've got to scrap all the old compound off, which is a pain in the ass.

If you ordered an AMD chip, you'll find it already has thermal compound on it. DO NOT add more if this is the case.
