Why is rap so popular?

It all started in 6th grade. EVERYONE loved mainstream rap. I don't see how people love this shit. Its wannabe gangsters talking about hoes,money,rep. I mean there is no lyrical talent AT ALL. It's worse than Dragonforce in terms of lyrics. And that is hard to do. Everyone loves mainstream rap at my school and ocasionally ill find a metalhead. It used to be like 50% mainstream rap/hip hop to 50% rock/metal in the 90's and now it's like 90% mainstream rap/hip hop to 10% rock/metal. And that means about 90% of the white kids are wiggers with sagging and tall tees. It's embarrising. It's like this EVERYWHERE in my city as far as I see. (I live in Arlington,Texas)

So yeah. Why is it popular?

Indeed, but not all rap songs are bad - there are a few GOOD ones out there, take i can ride a bike with no handlebars for example.



I like rap songs which MEAN somthing, and i hate the other ones which are basicly these two lines over and over:

Annnnnnnnd...mainstream rap is a piece of shit. They like it because it talks about "bitches" and "clubs" and "money"...which is all most mindless teenager drones care about. The beats are usually generic and easy to follow, and the chorus catchy. Shit, songs don't even have verses anymore...the whole damn things are chorus'.

But I can't throw down on rap all together. Underground rap, and the old school stuff (rapping BEFORE rap was the cool thing to do; ie: Snoop Dogg) - I like it. But then, I like everything except country, so who knows.

Ok I have heard about 30 rappers and some of what you guys call "good". I really don't get it. I don't listen to the radio either it is a pos. It just has lil wayne, akon, miley cyrus and the jonas brothers. All of which are wasting the air we breathe. And I don't watch music videos on tv. The only ok rapper i can think of is Run DMC because it is an actual band and not 1 guy talking about himself.

Why is rap popular? It's the "in" thing right now. Just how alternative rock was what everyone listened to in the 90's, and hair metal was big in the 80's, and how the 60's and 70's were full of what we now call classic rock. IMO, it's just because most people are sheep and go along with whatever the media tells them is cool.

I doubt rap will stay that popular for much longer now, though. Emo/screamo/whatever the hell you want to call it music is making its way onto the scene. Hell, the people that listen to it even call themselves "scene kids". Fags. But back on topic, yeah, it's a phase, let it die. I take it you are a metal fan? I'm sure the people who liked the style before that looked at you with your Metallica t-shirts and mullets and shook their heads much like you are doing now.

yeah i'll aggree with the fact that rap IS going downhill, i mean oldschool rap was actually pretty good, nowadays a meaningful rap song is kinda rare

rap is popular cus its catchy, the beat that is

also it takes less skill and practice which makes it more open for those who do not have money to take guitar or piano lessons n stuff, all you need is a beat, imagination, and some charisma, and ur good to go.

I love how people undermine the music scene. The american music scene is the largest in the world, followed by the japanese. No matter how many bands or artists you've heard, you haven't even heard 1% of the music being made.

It's ok to not like a genre because the sound doesn't spark anything in you, but to rip on an entire genre for being lacking when you haven't even heard 1% of the groups and artists in it, is kinda ignorant.
I mean, to say that there aren't many meaningfull or skilled rappers today, or that there aren't many rappers using real instruments etc, is bullshit.
The right term would be "there aren't many popular rappers today rapping about meaningfull stuff, using real instruments etcetc."

if you actually look into the genree, you can found 100 to 1000 of artists who fit that label.

I mean, how much music do you think is made every day? It's a lot.

Yeah shing02 is the bomb. His lyrics are brilliant. He has a lot of good songs appart from the collaboration with nujabes as well.

And nujabes produces beats for a lot of other rappers like shing02.

Back to the main main topic, tl;dr its because it is simple beats, usually mass produced for the general public. You think recording studios don't know what is popular? They can mix and remix shit until its subliminally right, and most people eat it right up.

i dont think its a case of rap being shit per se, i think its a case of manufactured and mass produced music being shit. in this case we are talking about rap for the masses... and yes its shit, but thats no different to other crappy mass produced music regardless of genre. like oister said, most people eat up this junk.
