Technology will advance, armies will get stronger, but so will defenses. Nukes get stronger, but so do missile-defense systems. Bullets hit harder, but armor absorbs more. Etc, etc.
You're focusing too much on the the technology, and not enough on what really matters. Guns may kill people, but they require people to pull the triggers. If you really want to get horrified, look at some of the philosophical and political movements rising recently. Those are the real threats of the future.

As far as up to now, the soldier is a vehicle to deliver firepower towards the enemy and surpresses it's movement and battlestrenght to hinder tactical advancement.
If you have a vehicle, that doesn't need water and food, but a small tank and that takes a couple of mags to the body easily, the decision is easy.
The infrastructural problematics of a behind frontlines suport stay the same, but the actual human presence is totally substitutable, through self or from disance controlled all terain/flying unmanned weapon platforms (once the actual agression is aoutonmeous, the second step would be keeping it sustained and so forth. Human controll can be totally abolished, laying our lives into the hand of faith; not smart alltogether, but possible).
An autonomous "tacical" system would be already deploying any kind of landmines, a distance controlled remote one high distance attilary.
They substitute the gunner, which substituted the piceanier and the pilum, which substitute the hand.
This spreads the radius of conflic from the person, to local, to regional, to remote, to global.
In fact, the problematic in our times, is the inteligence needed to identify threats, not to engage them, which basically shapes warefare since the begining in steadily rising manner.
As th development of arms is not in balance with the devlopment of intell methos, but greatly outweights it, we live in times of he asymetric threat.
So for the near future, i have to agree with you, that he main threat is coming from subversion, rather than open conflict.
Technically, it does need humans to be set of, but humans aren't the threat, the threat is the asymetric weakness, that makes countermethods far of being possibly deployed.
Humans themself aren't dangerous, the tools they wield are.
I think, that the US lives in a great misunderstanding, with it's looking back on the good ol times;
