I think they're alright as long as you're just playing for fun. I use to play some with a few friends, and it was entertaining for a bit. I think most people believe it's pointless because it's not in their interest. Therefore, social mmo's have really nothing to offer them. Like someone who like social mmo's may believe mmorpgs are pointless. It just depends on interest.
