Anarchy Online Celebrates. . . 15 years!?

AO

Holy damnit!  I read every press piece that comes by my desk, whether I have the time to deal with it or not. But this one honestly blew my mind. Anarchy Online is one of the many MMOs I had heard of in the early 2000s, but never played. I did have a few friends who dabbled, but I myself never got into it. At that time I was probably playing Everquest, or MUDs.  But I received an email today that Anarchy Online is celebrating fifteen years open, active, and alive!  I didn’t expect it to last three years, much less fifteen. I never really got into it, but I know a little about it. I know it’s complicated, probably terrifying out of date. I know it has “crafted concrete cushions”, a phrase that should never be uttered by anyone ever.

Don’t take this as “I hate AO and I’m bashing the balls off of it”, because that’s not what this is! I’m genuinely happy that it lasted so long. That’s a really impressive length of time for an MMO.  It’s funny, because when someone told me FFXI was still going strong, I laughed and said “No it isn’t. You’re lying” . . . oh, how wrong I was. So it’s totally possible for an MMO to last that long, but it doesn’t happen as often as one might think.  At the end of the day, people are still playing it, and having fun. That’s the important thing; it doesn’t have to be everyone’s cup of tea. It definitely wasn’t mine. But they’re doing some special stuff in-game between June 23-July 11, regardless of your member status. So be sure to check it out if you’re interested in Anarchy Online! You can find out more about it right right here!  Even if it’s not for me, it’s a real testament to the power of a community keeping a game going strong. Let’s hope it keeps that trend.  See? I’m positive sometimes.
