Blizzard Forums Will Soon Show Your Real Name

In a surprising move Blizzard has announced that the upcoming introduction of RealID will have a significant effect on their official forums as well:

“The first and most significant change is that in the near future, anyone posting or replying to a post on official Blizzard forums will be doing so using their Real ID — that is, their real-life first and last name — with the option to also display the name of their primary in-game character alongside it. These changes will go into effect on all StarCraft II forums with the launch of the new community site prior to the July 27 release of the game, with the World of Warcraft site and forums following suit near the launch of Cataclysm.”

Blue Post of Doom!

The discussion on the OnRPG forums has of course flared up over this.

Threadstarter GrandCrossX says: “As bad ideas go, this is pretty much the mother of all of them.”

Synlea looked at the calender and pointed out: “It’s a bit too early for April Fool’s day… so apparently, they’re being serious.”

OnRPG forum regular marcipaans adds:  “This may be the first step when Blizzard starts destroying themselves in the dizziness of their success.”

OnRPG Elite Member Deimos is on the other side of the fence and certainly has a good point: “Maybe people will stop being such d*ckwads all the time. You say that it might increase chances of someone coming to your house liek irl? Well maybe if you aren’t anonymous anymore then you WON’T say that one thing that would MAKE someone want to come to your house.”

Touché!

This discussion is sure to rage on for a little while and we’ll certainly keep a close eye on the developments.
