Golemizer Review: Create Monsters

Golemizer Review: Create Monsters
By Kei Beneza (dividelife), OnRPG Journalist

Just as the word suggests, Golemizer is a Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) Web Browser Game that lets players animate artificial beings from scratch. The game is fairly simple and requires zero technicalities. You’ll basically learn everything you need to play this game like a pro. No sir, there are no hidden commands or special techniques, this is a game where effort means everything. One of the best parts regarding this game is that you don’t need to install anything other than your browser. The game stands in a persistent world where players can interact with one another on the same platform. Pretty much feels like an MMORPG client game at some point, except for the graphics of course (being that its all 8 bit and stuff). It’s mostly rare for browser games to carry the persistent trait due to its— well— browser type engine.

Starting up

Registration in the game is hassle free as it lets you jump directly into the game right after you type your desired username and password. You’ll be given an array of tutorials to get you started. The tutorial isn’t really a mandatory thing, but you’d probably want to do it anyway as it gives you cash everytime you finish one. Once all is said and done, you’re on your way to creating various monsters to duel with. At first I was a bit confused due to the fact that the game wasn’t confusing me (WTH! You get it right?). I was confused by the fact that I was to make my Golem Stronger without relying on brain power. You could say that the game was simple enough to churn your head into butter.

Things to do

First and foremost, you are to gather enough resources to start making your community. You can also do quests to earn badges that will boost you up the rankings. Although there isn’t much to compete for in this game. One of the most cherished features in this game is the house decoration bit. Although you may think that the game encourages this part of the game, decorating your house doesn’t really give you anything other than a fully decorated house. You must always focus on your golem as it’s your main tool and weapon in this game.

Golemizer Playground

Pikachu! I choose you!

When fighting other golems or pursuing quests, your main tool is your golem. Golems tend to be pretty obedient in this game compared to their counterparts in other games. Technically you are to issue orders for your golem to execute moves and perform various tasks for their master. A player is NOT limited to one golem by the way, and can keep creating Golems through various items found in the game. If you’re wondering how the golem commands work, they’re practically similar to executing emote options in other MMOs. If you’re not familiar with them, these commands are done by typing “/” followed by the desired action. This by far is one of the most innovative way of ordering units, a bit of a hassle but fun nonetheless.

LOL Item shop

Unlike other MMOs, let alone browser games, Golemizer encourages people to make their own items out of resources found in the in game world. Aside from items, Golems can also be manufactured this way, making it fun to experiment. So far, this may BE the only technical (more of experimental) feature in the game. It’s always fun to experiment with less stuff to worry about. You can just enjoy crafting golems without having to worry about other things in the game (cuz you can always do em later).

The in game economy is composed of players who are selling materials or finished products. It’s basically a huge community of merchants who happen to be crafters as well. This makes it a bit crappy since things are pretty much found everywhere and would take a real sloth to actually buy some materials.

Golemizer Town

Welcome to my humble home!

This feature reminds me of Animal Crossing for the DS. The game lets players host their own private space on the field. Since you can build a whole city out of scratch (or buy em off another player), you can invite people over to chat with them or maybe get a few kicks of roleplay in the process. I’m not really sure why a lot of people like this factor (back in the DS), but if it’s awesome, then it would most probably work wonders for this game. Since the game does revolve around the idea of Massively Multiplayer, this particular feature enhances that aspect.

Graphics and sounds

Being a browser game, its engine doesn’t quite have enough juice to supply the game with awesome graphics. The game runs entirely on an 8-bit isometric birds eye view. If you were to ask me, the graphics revolve around games released for the NES. The elements are flat and contain less detail compared to other browsing games. One thing however that separates this from other browsing games is its ability to let you move your character on screen without having to click on options like “Enter bar”. The graphics are quite choppy but the main thought of you in a persistent MMO world makes up for it.

Golemizer Players

The verdict

For a browser game, Golemizer is quite impressive with its persistent field and simplistic gameplay. I’ve played various MMO browser games but never have I seen one that lets you exercise the client based Persistency found mostly in application games. The community is friendly but desperately need population. No use building a house if you’re gonna host a party of 1 right? The attack and command system is awesome. If you think about it, the /command thing actually enhances your role as the master rather than as a player. It’s quite easy to immerse yourself when playing these types of games. My verdict? Clearly awesome. Play it! Nuff said.

Pros:
– Persistent territory
– Walking animations
– Command options
– Simple enough for everyone to learn.

Cons:
– Low population
– Too simple for hardcore gamers
– Repetitive at some point.

Zero Online: Who can win? The Tortoise or the Rabbit?

Before you start the game, there will be 2 options for you to choose: help the Tortoise or help the Rabbit.

Of course, it won’t be easy for you to get to the Fuel Depot. The numerous enemies on the track will be the first thing you need to take care!

World of Warcraft ups the ante in their war on Goldsellers

Blizzard has taken another step in their war on Goldsellers. By explaining in their FAQ how detrimental the effects of dealing with Goldsellers and powerlevel companies are to the game as well as to the individual experiences of World of Warcraft players.

We would like to make a clear statement here about the negative impact of buying gold and using power-leveling services. Every day, we encounter players who have been negatively affected and targeted by companies offering these services. So, we hope to raise awareness about the practices they engage in and the detrimental effects they have on all players, including their own customers, as well as on the game environment as a whole.

Blizzard has found that Goldselling and hacking very often goes hand in hand:

Through our normal support processes and the assistance of players, we also find that many accounts that have been shared with power-leveling services are then hacked into months later, and all of the items on the account are stripped and sold off.

World of Warcraft - War on Goldsellers

They go on to emphasize that indirectly, these Goldsellers and hackers are delaying the development of the game:

We also want players to recognize that these companies often employ people to do their work through the use of disruptive hacks in the game, which can cause realm performance and stability issues. The companies essentially take time away from our development and in-game support efforts as we work to stop their exploits and assist players who have become their victims in recovering characters and items. They spam advertisements, use bots that make it hard for players to find the resources they need, and raise the cost of items through inflation.

World of Warcraft - War on Goldsellers

The conclusion is very clear and to the point:

We hope the information presented here is helpful to anyone considering buying gold or using a power-leveling service; these are just a few reasons that those services can negatively impact World of Warcraft and other games, and we strongly encourage players not to support the companies that offer them.

Bounty Bay Online: Wedding System on the horizon

Even the most hard-boiled pirates and seafarers long for a little love and romance alongside the routine of combat and discovery. Therefore from 25th November, the new marriage system in the announced expansion ‘Beyond the Horizon’ offers all love-struck freebooters the opportunity to make their love official.

There will be two NPCs in front of the church in London who will be at players’ disposal as wedding planners. Those wishing to marry can use them to reserve the London cathedral for the celebrations and also to get invitations for friends and the wedding dress, as well as decorations for the church. Players get these items for coupons which they can obtain via special quests or get from the Item shop.  On the other hand, the happy couple can buy wedding rings and the bride’s bouquet from the NPCs using in-game currency.

Once all of the arrangements have been made, the master of ceremonies and the most senior witnesses will lead the marriage pair through the wedding until the bond of marriage, accompanied by music chosen by the wedding guests, can be happily sealed. As a first wedding present, the newlyweds will receive an increase in their character values and a ring symbol next to their names will signal that they are now no longer there for the taking.

‘Beyond the Horizon’ will be the third and up to now most comprehensive add-on to Bounty Bay Online . It offers over 250,000 European players numerous new features such as the new continent of South America, six new cities, five new character classes, new instances, and an expanded pet system with new pets, new PvP arenas and tournaments, new ranking systems and a new mini-game. In keeping with its predecessors, ‘Beyond the Horizon’ will be available to download free of charge.

MapleStory Europe Interview: Constant New Events

Questions by Rick Charbs, Onrpg Journalist
Answered by Jamie Suk, PR Representative (on behalf of Mr. Sung Jin Kim, Director at NEXON Europe)

MapleStory Europe is quickly catching up to Maple Global. Here’s what Jamie Suk, Pr Representative of NEXON Europe had to say during our exclusive interview: “As for MapleStory Europe, we can definitely expect far more contents and updates in the coming months – we have a very tight schedule with lots of new, large updates lined up, and are constantly planning on new events and features to bring more dynamic and fun to our players.:” Read on for some interesting MapleStory Europe information!

Onrpg: What were your ambitions for the European release of MapleStory? Have they been achieved?
With more than 1million users, we are certainly delightful with the result we have achieved until now. But we can’t really put our initial ambitions into words as the more successful MapleStory Europe gets, the higher rises our ambition. We have many more plans with MapleStory Europe, but our ultimate goal is of course to position MapleStory Europe as the top-runner of its kind in Europe and to invite as many players as possible to our game and community.

Onrpg: MapleStory updates quite frequently. What has been recently added into the game?
The most remarkable update is the new job class, “Knights of Cygnus” (KOC), which has been added to MapleStory Europe in July. KOC offers easier yet detailed entry tutorial and speedy level-up for newcomers to MapleStory, while our advanced players can upgrade their gaming experience with a totally new, additional character and set of skills. And we’re just about to bring another big update in September, and there are many more in queue.

Onrpg: What ongoing events are you hosting (forum or in-game)?
Currently, we have one of our annual European events going on, the Spanish “La Tomatina”. During the event period, giant tomato mobs appear in several towns of Maple World and players receive special items for conquering them. We have also many events running in our new world “Demethos”. To name a few, we have the “2x EXP & Drop rate” event which literally increases the rates of EXP and drop for players hunting in Demethos. Next, we have a special quest “Teo’s Reminiscence” where all players who do their first and second job advancements in Demethos receive extra Mesos. Also, couples who use our in-game wedding system in Demethos are eligible to receive a set of couple rings in celebration of their wedding. Special events celebrating the launch of “Knights of Cygnus” are also still running, like the special event quests “Remnants of Black Wizard” and “Spirit Pendant”.  We have also an event that rewards players who reach certain levels with a Knights of Cygnus character. So as you can see, we have LOTS of fun and special things going on right now!

MapleStory Europe

Onrpg: What is Pigmy? Could you offer a little insight on the 10th Pigmy update?
Pigmy is the equivalent to “gachapon” in the Global version of MapleStory, a lottery-like mini-game that awards MapleStory players with random items. Players can obtain pigmy-eggs by feeding the pigmies with dry treats from the potion shops using Mesos. The pigmy-eggs then need to be ‘hatched’ using an incubator that can be purchased from the Cash Shop using NX Cash. The content of the pigmy-eggs vary depending on the location of the pigmies, and players can also trade their pigmy eggs with ones from other towns. Most recently, we had our 13th Pigmy update including the ‘Dragon Chair’ which is only available through Pigmy for a limited time.

Onrpg: How do you think MapleStory gains its success?
There may be various reasons, but our biggest drive is the continuous support of our players. Without their reports, suggestions, advices and of course passionate engagement in the game, we never could have come this far. We try to meet their loyal enthusiasm with frequent updates of new contents and non-stop delivery of special, exclusive events in and around the game. MapleStory offers many unique features that make it stand out of the crowd like the bright, cheerful graphics, easy interface, endless customization options and various social functions.

Onrpg: What is your absolute favourite aspect in the game? Why is that so?
It’s difficult to cut it down to one single aspect, as MapleStory is a great game BECAUSE it combines so many great attributes at once. Especially the community aspects in and around the game make it very easy and inviting for players to enjoy the game with existing friends and to make new ones at the same time.

Onrpg: For players new to the concept of 2D side-scrollers, what would you say to encourage people to try out your game?
The 2D side-scroll system is a completely different experience for users who are used to the standard 3D or quarter-view look and at the same time is easily approachable for players who are quite new to online RPGs. The nostalgic jumping up-and-down and clear steering mechanism along with the 2D side-scrolling viewpoint set a fresh spin to traditional MMOs, worth a try for both experienced and new players.

Onrpg: What makes the European version of MapleStory so dazzling? Why should a European play it over the global version?
From scratch, MapleStory Europe was designed to fit the wants and needs of our players in Europe. With our servers located in Europe and offering numerous Europe-based payment options, our infrastructure itself is fine-tuned for easy access and use of players residing in Europe. From the contents point of view, we are quickly catching up with the Global version and are even accelerating the process now to offer our European players an equal playground, but above all we have many contents that can only be enjoyed in the European version such as the traditional series of events reflecting the European national holidays. These days, we don’t really want the European version to be too dependent on the Global service or vice versa as we have different targeting groups in terms of their geographical location, and both NEXON America and NEXON Europe try their best to bring the best suitable content and service for their users.

Combat

Onrpg: What would you assume the players find the most interesting about the game?
MapleStory is refreshingly unique among the traditional heavy and dark ‘hack-and-slash’ type of MMOs. Its cheerful graphics combined with simple, yet deep game-play mechanics, challenging quests, unique in-game events and extensive social community functions can be enjoyed by and appeal to players of all gender and age.

Onrpg: How strong is the community value of the game? What do you do to keep the community happy?
The community value is very important, as it is for most MMOs. We try to keep the forums active and have recently hired some of our players as our forum moderators who are doing a great job in administrating and helping out fellow players on the forums. We also encourage in-game events that are based on guild and/or party quests and conduct various web-based events that require the support and vote of fellow players.

Onrpg: What inspired you to offer the silly mini flash game of MapleStory on the website?
Since MapleStory is a client-based game, we wanted to offer our players some fun activity while they complete the download and installation process and give them a (very simplified) first hands-on experience in what they are just about to enter. Utilizing the characteristics of flash games, it can also be enjoyed as a little fun between breaks.

Onrpg: Will you be getting the pirate class, hosted in many other MapleStory versions, soon?
Players of MapleStory Europe will definitely receive all major classes and content updates that are released elsewhere, including the pirate class. It’s just a matter of the right timing which is quite complex to decide. But as you may have noticed, we are really speeding up the update cycle and pirate class is also on our list.

Maple Story Wedding

Onrpg: What are your intentions for the future of the title?
As for MapleStory Europe, we can definitely expect far more contents and updates in the coming months – we have a very tight schedule with lots of new, large updates lined up, and are constantly planning on new events and features to bring more dynamic and fun to our players. Our next big update will be on July 1st, including new maps within the Aqua dungeon, addition of mini dungeons and a massive improvement of the current game system. And to reveal a bit more, MapleStory Europe will have yet another enormous update this summer, and our players can look forward to a complete new experience with the introduction of “Knights of Cygnus”, which could be described as the “Season 2” of MapleStory.
